    Fictional Characters

How do you feel about all of these fictional characters that parents make their children believe are real.

    The Easter Bunny
    Tooth Fairy
    Santa
The Stork/Lying about where babies come from.

I personally believe that it's setting a bad example to children who are very impressionable and may feel that it's okay to lie as long as it's all fun and games.

My sister cried when she was told that santa isn't real. So my mom had to cover it up with another lie. That he used to live but he died and we do this to honor him.

It's these little lies that we pay no attention to that can corrupt a childs thinking

Oh c'mon, it's all in good fun.

Part of growing up is figuring out for yourself that those figures don't actually exist.

Well you would think the parents would lose credibility for what they say from then on but children are to young to have rational thoughts of their own so they just accept things as they are told. They can’t comprehend that if their parents are lying about one thing such as "Santa", that another thing they have been taught their whole life could also be false.

How is this bad? It's happened to so many people and they're fine. Besides it's a part of growing up to decide what's real and not

You forgot to mention the invisible Pink Unicorn. You also forgot to mention God.

I don't see a problem with it, as they'll figure out eventually that it's not real, and it's just fun and games. The problem is as someone else said, God.

Santa has never started a war.

actually "santa" was based on a real person, who has been long dead. He gave gifts to the poor, so they where not actually lieing.

Anyway, its harmless, and seriously, does a 5 year old need to know the mechanics of sex/understand it? no.

I guess in some cases its easier then explaining why everything really happens.

Child: Mum why do i get presents at christmass?

mother: Because some guy died and got crusified or something or rather.

    Child: Whats crusified?

Mother : Being nailed to a cross.

    etc, ignore spelling please :embar:

I do no believe in any of those fictional characters, HOWEVER, I do believe in the possibility that those fictional characters are based on real people. Or their symbolic meaning when compared to animals and such. (easter bunny and stork).

Well for some people see God as a fictional creation, so why not throw him into the fold?

Now im not really sure who your talking to here because there were numerous members who suggested God in this topic, but what gives you the right to tell people what they can or cannot say about theyre opinion on the matter, as long as theyre response is intellectual, why not i say.

I dont really even know how to explain this one, but you certainly have a sour attitude to the well being of our future generation

God is brought up because those other fictional characters mentioned are generally harmless. God, real or not, is far from harmless.

I think it is a lot of fun.

And it teaches you an important life lesson-everything you love is not real.

St. Nick was a real person.

Also: Where's the harm in lying if it's just a little white lie? I see no problem with this, as it's all in good fun.
