Hey guys!

This is NOT an X vs Y vs Z topic, and it isn't aimed at people such as x9 who seem to go out of their way to diss very good and completely workable OS's such as Mac OSX and Ubuntu Linux, so if you're one of those types of people, kindly leave. This isn't a topic for those who wish to say "I don't use Linux", etc. because thats just spam.

Well, my favorite distribution at the moment is probably Fedora. I downloaded it a few days ago and I must say, I'm impressed. Considering that time I used Red Hat, I really didn't think Fedora would be any different. I also like OpenSuSE, and Ubuntu. I've heard Gentoo is great, but seeing as I downloaded either the LiveCD or the Minimal install, it really sucked when I used it. I've also tried Knoppix, and a few Slackware based distributions. Knoppix was the perfect OS for data recovery, but its not the best for a desktop OS. The various slackware distros that came with my PC magazine DVDs weren't the best either. They just didn't impress me at all.

Discuss. And please, if you have something to see, keep it to the topic. Windows isn't Linux.

Redhat for desktop OS, and Slax for Live.

I don't really have reasons why..I just like them..

I tried Red Hat 7 I think. I don't know what the newest version is ... My father just had the discs so I decided to give it a spin.

I've also tried some Mandriva/Mandrake based distributions. PCLinuxOS was alright, but it had some things that I didn't like. One thing being it used KDE, when I use Gnome whenever possible. I dislike the KDE interface, even though people consider it to be more user friendly. I have my reasons. KDE uses more memory, and its too bulky for my liking, if you know what I mean.

I've heard Debian is good, but I'm currently lacking in DVD's to put it on. Debian is 4 DVDs or so big last time I checked, and I only have like 3 rofl. Better buy some more ...

I guess I'm sorta like you with Slax when it comes to me with Fedora. I downloaded it so I could try it, I install it (which took almost no time at all), and I install the MadWifi drivers for my D-Link card, and everything from then on was a breeze. Heck, even installing the drivers were a breeze (even though the install method is almost generic through any UNIX based operating system, lol. "make" and then "make install"). Most of my drivers are already supported on Fedora anyway.

Its not the easiest (which I credit Ubuntu for), but its not the hardest, and its just me.

Anyone other than Daily got anything to say? There has to be more Linux-users out there! ^_^

LOL LINUX SUCKS!!11!!11!11!!!

:p

You should remember that I don't just diss OS X and Linux. I support my arguments with evidence. There are good sides to every OS. Don't try to make me out as the bad guy.

So thats why you went on to the Apple IRC and told everyone to throw out "those pieces of shit you call computers" ...

you also fail, x9, for not realizing that Linux can be as accomodating for the end-user as Windows or Mac, in the sense that you're willing to devote two minutes to learning basic console commands to get you by in an average day. Most of the time I don't even need to use the console, because everything is extremely visual anyway. What do I want to do to install a program? I double click on an RPM file, just like I'd double click a self-extracting archive or installshield wizard program. What do I do to run a program? I open the applications window. What do I do to browse the internet? I open Firefox from the applications menu. What do I do to do my homework? I open the office suit from the application menu. etc. etc.. You only execute the respective command via console when you want a finer detail of control, or verbose output incase you're a software developer yourself.

Anyway, I'm VERY impressed with Fedora Core lately, apart from the slight dependency issue I had when trying to upgrade SANE, which isn't all that important anyway. Does anyone have any ideas for other Linux Distros I can try? I'm always open for suggestions as to what I should and shouldn't try ;)

Gentoo or Ubuntu, depending on how much tolerance I have for 'do-it-yourself' at the time.

Lol... most mac users are elitists who refuse to believe that their OS isn't absolutely perfect in every possible way... I'm prepared to argue that, I have a thread a few pages down about OS comparison, I think I should bump/sticky it so we can discuss that stuff there rather than in your thread >_>

I agree but x9 still didn't need to do that.

The only Linux I really like is Ubuntu.

Don't know why either...
