I wouldn't recommend using fakes at all. But it also depends on the area. College towns don't care.

This is indeed true, college towns typical let most people over 18 plus in the bar, and to get drinks isn't really a problem if you knew the right people. Besides it has to do with attitude and who you are with more than what your ID says.
