Has anyone ever backpacked through Europe?

Basically, I've always wanted to travel through Europe instead of just going away on your traditional holidays with my friends which I see as a mundane waste of money and I'd much rather travel through various countries in Europe with a group of friends.

I'm 19 now and I wanted to do this last year, I'd prefer to do this while I'm still young and hopefully if saving goes to plan would like to go this summer and travel to around 10 different countries in Europe.

I'm just curious if anyone on Sythe has any experience of this and could give me some information about costs, best methods of transport to use etc?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated :D

I personally haven't been too Europe myself, but that's also a goal of mine that I would like to accomplish at some point in my life, hopefully while I'm still young too.

OT: I'd imagine it'd take a big chunk of money out of your pocket, considering you have to deal with travel expenses, lodging, food, transportation, and even event expenses, so I personally have no clue how much exactly you'd need, but a word of advice, better to be over prepared then under.

I've never personally done it but I have a friend who's about 23ish who did it and loved it, and I have another friend who also backpacked across Europe and had a real shit experience and ended up coming home far earlier.

As for myself, after watching the movie Hostel I never want to travel to Europe lol. Kind of an irrational fear of mine.

Rofl, that's a horrible movie to bring up in a topic like this, you're going to prevent the kid from ever considering to go to Europe, for ever, lol.

Thanks for the replies I guess, it's nice to see that other people are interested in the same type of thing. I have a rough idea of what I'd need to pay for; travel, hostels, food, going out etc just looking for someone who could give me a better idea of the expenses.

Haha, funny you should mention that movie :p It wouldn't deter me from living my life though ha.

How many nights do you plan on sleeping in hotels?

Yeah and it's preventing me from doing anything like that hahaha.

@OP good job not being deterred by that movie. True sign of dedication to your goal.

I've been thinking maybe 1-2 months in total away. With a european rail card allowing me 15 days of travel. Anwywhere from 5-10 different countries.

I won't be staying in hotels, hostels or camping would be more likely. Hopefully stay 2-4 days in each city. Visiting a maximum of two cities per country.

These are just rough plans, I don't have anything certain yet.

Become a member of Youth Hostels. Way cheaper than most accommodations and good facilities. Occasional camping is fine but you will get tired of it if you spend many nights in camps
