So, in all honesty, I was taking a bath and had a fairly profound conversation with myself. I'm next to positive this has been brought up before but I couldn't find anything googling so here goes.

Think of WoW, Runescape, Starcraft, etc. Especially Xbox Live games such as Halo, COD. At higher levels of competition, all suffer from problems such as DDoS and the like. When a player attempts to achieve a certain ranking, outside factors such as these diminish his enjoyment of said game and can very likely lead to a lower userbase or the "eye for an eye" mentality which adds great toxicity to the community as a whole.

How to prevent DDoS? Personally, I find it unreasonable to expect every player to have the knowledge to prevent such attacks. Common methods, such as VPN, are not available free of charge to most people.

As such, what widespread methods of preventing such attacks? Tor?

(If you don't know what Tor is a simple google search will do wonders)

For example, Runescape. It used to be 100% within the browser, no official client available. Is the same possible via Tor? Would internet connection speeds suffer too greatly? What about in turn-based games where latency isn't that huge of a deal (up to 5 second grace isn't unreasonable, Hearthstone gives, what, 30s? for decision making).

Latency aside I personally wouldn't like to associate any account that I care about with a TOR ip.

    Why?

College internets make exceptions. Home Internet shouldn't be a problem. As far as account recovery goes clearly IP wouldn't be a good way of doing so, just weight recovery questions much more heavily and be very explicit at signup that if such details are compromised or forgotten recovery will be impossible. Period.

Because you're associating your account with the potentially flagged ip's of hackers, glitchers, botters, rwt'ers, scammers, etc. It could cause your account to be flagged simply by association, and if you decide to bot or rwt on your account it could increase your chances of getting banned.

Did you read the original post?

This theory is for, for example, me creating a game. I would decide who gets banned and who doesn't. Not for using Tor mechanics to access existing games available through common browsers.

Obviously you couldn't ban people based on tumbled IPs.

You can prevent ddosing in games without forcing people to use TOR. You cannot get someone's ip in runescape directly from the game. I'm pretty sure you can get ips in xbox live because the players connect directly to the host instead of a server, but I'm not 100% sure on that.
