Experience Simulation Machine

Recently at school, my tutor (person who checks our attendance etc in the morning) asked us all a question about a very strange machine. According to our teacher, the idea was originally thought up by a well-known psychologist, although she did not mention his name.

This machine was one that you could step into, and experience anything you like, just like a simulator but better. You could go in, and experience the climbing of mount Everest, but when you got out again, it would be like you never did it at all. You would still remember it, you could tell everyone about your fake experience but it would not of actually happened.
Everything would be the same inside the machine as it is in your real life, if you requested it to be so. You could have all of your friends, with their personalities, memories and everything, it would be just like the real world, to the slightest detail.

There are a few flaws to this though, as mentioned, you could not of actually experienced these things in reality. Also, this machine isn't like Narnia, when you go in, the amount of time you spend in the machine is the same amount of time in real life, everything passes by as it would do. You could stay in for as long as you like, but you may miss out of key events in the real world, say a terrorist bombing or on a lighter note, the birth of a child.

The question we had to answer was, if we could go inside, what would we do? For how long? And all similar questions. I'm interested in what you would do and how you feel about this, I found it quite fascinating.
If there's anything you feel I have not cleared up quite enough, please mention and I will further explain it to you, I know it's a pretty broad subject. :/

We asked this in class and didn't really get a straight answer, but to clear things up, let's say if you die in the machine, it turns off/stops just like a dream. Good question.

In theory, yes but in this situation, you're not supposed to. This question is purely to see what you would do if you had the opportunity to, it can apparently tell what sort of person you are by what decision(s) you make.

Personally i'd never use it, don't see the point. Go out and get a real life is my opinion on anyone who would use it.

 

I would use it to practice dangerous scenarios. Like, you're about to drive off a cliff, or you work at a bank, and you notice it's being robbed but they don't notice you.

I think it would be really helpful. However, there are a lot of negative side effect. Like, a terrorist perfecting his plot to bomb an airport or something.

I would use that machine to experience things I'm to scared to try in reality. This could be awesome people mostly do stuff out of curiosity and you know what they say about curiosity. Question would this dream give you end results of how stuff would go down if so this would be amazing.

 

I completely agree, for example you could run a marathon inside the machine, but it would be completely false, it would be no where near the same feeling as physically completing the marathon for yourself.

It depends on what you do inside the machine to be honest, a few people in my class said they'd prefer a life inside the machine as opposed to a real, challenging life. I personally like the challenging aspect of life, it gives you things to aspire for and work at.

Yes, you could practice dangerous things which would be good because if you died inside the machine, you would wake up and carry on real life as normal. It could be a good way of trying things out that you are afraid to in real life as everything will be the same inside the machine as it is in real life, people's personalities, the world around you, everything.

Yes, everything inside is exactly the same as it is for you in real life, everyone is the same, all your surroundings are the same and everyone has their memories of everything. It's basically real life, but fake.
