Here's the issue at its core.

The Mayan calendar didn't predict anything; the Mayans just had to end their calendar somewhere and stopped. They were just finishing their calendar for the time being, not predicting that the world would end. Even if they did think that the world would end, why should you trust them? All places have weird beliefs that don't make any sense (in America most people think a cosmic zombie Jew will save them if they believe in him and eat his flesh).
