At 8:30 PM on Saturday 26th March 2011, lights will switch off around the globe for Earth Hour and people will commit to actions that go beyond the hour.

What are your thoughts of earth hour? It is not a good idea. Telling people to turn out the lights for one hour one day will not change anything. Why not make it "Hour of replacing an ordinary light bulb with a compact fluorescent bulb"?

I still think that if every person in the world was to do this it would make a massive difference, If you do not already have energy efficient light bulbs installed that is a great idea, not only is it helping the climate but will decrease your average monthly energy bills sufficiently.

Personally, I support the people participating in Earth hour, I think it's great that people can band together like that

Well TBH, I won't actively be taking part, I'll turn more stuff off than I usually would, however I won't go out of my way to if that makes sense.

Personally If I think that I myself can make a meaningful difference, if even everyone in the world participated in this could make a meaningful difference then I would participate. However If you were to slaughter cows you'd get a better reduction in CO2 emissions than you would turning off your lights.

i dont like that phrase either. it makes it seem as if someone who does not do this is somehow being selfish by not "doing their part"

 

What are your thoughts of earth hour? There is absoluetly no point for a household to do this since your contribution will be minute. Its directed at large business's which use lots of energy and add pollution to our environment

I think it's more of the publicity than actually saving power. Because if you think about it, 1 hour isn't much; it'll save some power short term but then one hour later we're at the same spot.

The point is to get the message across that saving power is important...etc.

I think 1 hour can definetly make a difference. Thats 1 hour of thousands (possibly) of people turning off their main electricity. Thats enough energy saved to power quite alot. Besides, even if it only makes a small difference, a difference is a difference...right? Lights off in 6 minutes here.

I just made fun of my sister earlier today because she was talking for a week about how she wants to do it for school and stuff and then she forgot. Funny shit man.

not enough organization, like davidh93 said. I also forgot about it... otherwise I'm all for helping the environment.
