    1.0 - Introduction

» Welcome to my merchanting guide. I've earned a lot of money from this in the past. For instance, between the 11th and 12th of June, I went from 12m to 20m. That's a lot of money in just 2 days and, at the moment, I have 45M. I'm NOT going to teach you WHAT item to merchant. I'm going to teach you HOW to find an item to merchant.

For this we are going to use the Grand Exchange Database only. No annoying people who say "OMG RUNE PLATES OMG THEY ARE GOOD TO MERCH NOW." In fact they are only trying to get you to buy their plates. Although you will see that rune plates are merchable sometimes too. You'll see.

    Before we get started:

You can find the GE Database Here:

    Buy/sell limits per 4 hours:
    100 for Weapons/Armor (UK: Armour)
    ~ (10k arrows)
    10k for Food
    100 Rings/Necklaces/Amulets
    10k for Feathers
    25k for Herbs
    25k for Ores
    25k for Logs
    25k for Runes
    10k for Potions

    Update:

Many items that are frequently purchased on the Grand Exchange have had their purchase limits increased so you can buy more of them at once. These include bows, poisoned darts, several dragonhide items, poh teleport tablets, pyre logs, bones, fruit and more!

If you buy an item, you cannot sell that item in the next 4 hours. Same goes vice versa.
You are able to put the offer in the Grand Exchange but it will do nothing for 4 hours.

The 4 hour rule is a rule made by jagex; It's to avoid that people can buy like 1000 santa hats forcing the price to go up by tons. Now you can only buy 100 per 4 hours which will not affect the price that much.

    2.0 - Long-Term Investments [Using Charts]

This is a nice and simple way to earn money through merchanting. It's recommended that you have at least around 5-6m (or higher, of course) since you ARE buying in bulk for this (depending on price.)

Well, let's have a look at a 'chart'. You can find these on the Grand Exchange Database.

This is a chart for Obsidian capes.

As you can see I have put a few arrows on there. Firstly, I want to explain to you that the YELLOW line is the daily average, LIGHT ORANGE the 5 day average, and the ORANGE one is the 20 day average.

As you can see, all my arrows point to somewhere where my lines cross. This only counts when the yellow crosses the light-orange. That's really important. That's a SIGNAL. It means it's going to change direction.

    So if:
Price is already going down –- CROSS -– Price will go up
Price is already going up –- CROSS -– Price will go down

As a side-note, the price will not change direction IMMEDIATELY; it might take a day or so.

When buying these things in bulk, don't simply put in minimum price. Of course, you want to have them as cheap as possible, but you also want them quick (since the GE updates every day.)
So if min is 35k, med is 37k and high is 39k, put in something like 35.5k, wait for it to raise and then sell for med/high - whatever you want to try. When the minimum is rather close to the med (like rune full helmets) min is 20500, med is 21200 then try something like 20701. The extra 1 is to steal the items from others who have their price set at 20700.

Someone asked me if he should invest in this and I said yes (this happened around the middle of the last square.)
It looked like this at the time:

In this chart, you cannot yet see that the last lines are going to cross but I still told him that the prices would be going up. It's a bit hard to explain but I can just see that those lines are going to cross each other soon. And that was true.

That was just 1 day. The price will probably be going up even more. But be warned, once you think the lines are going to cross again, wait for the right moment to sell them. Of course you can also ask me if you need any further help on this.

Another example is this Godsword. Stay focused on the fact that the GE will always try to get the price back up to the zone I outlined in red.

    3.0 - Finding Long-Term Merchants

For this, we're going back to have a look at the Grand Exchange Database again. You see "Price Rises/Drops", "Most Traded Items" and "Most Valuable Traded Items". Well, I suggest you look in "Most Valuable Traded Items" for long-term merchants. You can also look in "most traded items" but these merchants last much shorter.

Now before you start looking in there, I want you to know that the fact that an item is worth less, doesn't mean it's bad for merchanting. For instance, I made more money off a Robin Hood Hat (~2m) than with a Bandos Godsword (~30m). This is not always true but still keep it in mind.

The best way to find these items is to look at a item that went up around 3k for an example (or that went down around 3k.) Once you find one like that, look at the graph and use the knowledge you gained in Chapter 1. Again, if you look at the graph and it shows the item has been flat all the time (straight line, sometimes a few small ups and downs), don't bother with it. When you find a good item, you can simply get rich by sitting back there waiting for the Grand Exchange to update!

You also might wonder, "when is the right moment to buy?"

Well, if the item is already going up (like +3k) it's going to be a really hard time for you to get this item.
    Look at this chart:

As you can see the Top hat's line is flattening out. There is a big chance that the 5 day average line will catch up with the daily average.
Plus there will be a lot more merchanters who will try to invest: so you must be quick, before it's too late when merching an item like this.

4.0 - Predicting Cross-Overs (Useful for when to buy, when to sell)

You might wonder what is the best time to buy or sell an item. A lot of people just simply say, "well, yes, when the price is at the bottom or top."
I find it better to buy/sell them earlier though.

As you can see I planted my buys/sells JUST before the sell-bottom and JUST before the buy-top. That's because when the price is STILL going down, people will sell you an item at a lower price. When the price is still going UP, people will buy your item at a higher price.

But now about the predicting; as you can see I also planted some white lines. These lines are very useful since they let us know that there is a chance that the buy or sell-signal is about change. A lot of these graphs want to create a "bowl", as you can see above.

But, be warned, DO NOT MAKE YOUR CHOICES ON THIS RIGHT AWAY:

As you can see it can also do otherwise (look at first white line.)

    And also:

    5.0 - Short-Term Merchanting

This way of merchanting is perfect for beginners and for people with not as much money. I do suggest you still have at least 3m or so though (with less your profits would be so poor that you'd be better off killing cows.)
This is an old way and it still works. I'm only aiming at F2P items for now. There is no need to look at the charts and, basically, this has almost no risk. The prices will always stay stable, and even when the items go up or down a little, it still works.

As you can see here, the line is very flat so there's no need to worry about the price.

Membership is very helpful to have, as you get 6 GE boxes, instead of 2. However, this is only necessary if you have 10m+ or so to invest.

    First look at these:
    (buy/sell limits)

    100 armor/weapons/bows
    ~ (10k arrows)
    20k food
    25k runes
(the rest is not really that important)

So now ask yourself; if you were F2P, what would you buy?
Well, that's obvious; Rune armour, Lobsters and Runes (PKing supplies in general) are traded a lot.

    Examples:

    Rune full helm
** Note: These are not today's prices!

    Min: 20840 Med: 21238 Max: 22000

Try buying at 20900, maybe a little more if it's not working. Once you have bought all your items, wait 4 hours (buy/sell delay) and then sell it for 21700 or so.
Don't worry if it's not working.

So the profit would be around <amount you bought> * 800
    100*800 = 80k

    In this case: 60k

Of course, that is not much, but if you combine it with 5 other items, the profit could be around 300 - 600k.

    If it's not working:
1- You have not waited long enough (patience is necessary)
2- The price is too high (DO NOT TAKE THIS AS THE REASON STRAIGHTAWAY - Patience is very important)

NOTE: This isn't the end of the guide. My mac couldn't grab all the pictures and transfer them. If you're looking into the most detailed version of the guide go here:

Well, some people aren't aware of this guide and it's very useful.
Yet since you give great Runescape sex, I'll consider it has constructive criticism not spam. <3.

No problem, but it isn't mine.

It's quite a good guide Merchant. And back off Rain, he gave credit to the original poster and website, he simply wanted to share the info with the Sythe community.

How's merchanting? I still remember that night at the Grand Exchange when we hung out, I guessed you're merchanting set for hours. I came across the word "Dharok" again you said "Nope". I tried it, and look I gained over 25M in a week of logging on once a day. :'(
