    Doublethink.

    Doublethink, are we victims?

    For those who don't know, or haven't read George Orwell's 1984 (1949),
Doublethink is holding two contradictory thoughts in one's mind and believing both to be true. Furthermore, it is the ability to recite one while suppressing the other when the time is appropriate, meaning in order to fit into society.

I want to write more on collective oligarchies, reality control, and the military-industrial complex, but that's an essay haha. I will edit this post soon with my imput on each of the aforementioned concepts.

For those who are wondering what I mean by are we the victims of doublethink, I mean have we been conditioned to utilize doublethink to remain loyal/unopposed to our government. For example the moon landing. Science tells us it was technologically impossible for a man to travel to the moon and back alive in 1969. However, to this day, it is one of America's most celebrated achievements. We know it couldn't have happened, but we celebrate that it did. Doublethink.

If I understand you correctly, everyone's a victim of double thinking. Especially females.

Have you got any other examples that aren't government related?

That's different? Your example is basically "If I can't achieve or reach what I want to do it's not worth it". Justin's example is acceptance / believing something when instinctively you know it is illogical etc.

Cognitive dissonance is not what you just described it to be, however it is also not exactly what Justin's example is.

Cognitive dissonance is an uncomfortable feeling caused by holding two contradictory ideas simultaneously.

Doublethink is holding two contradictory thoughts in one's mind and believing both to be true. (Quoting from Justin)

The main difference, is that Cognitive dissonance is a feeling, and Double think is the act; that is to say Cognitive dissonance is brought about by Double think.

so i guess the better question would be:

what efforts has the government taken to reduce cognitive dissonance resulting from doublethink relating to government activities?

i would say every single one of us holds contradictory beliefs.

we all want to live forever, yet we all know we are going to die.
a lot of us believe that murder is wrong while simultaneously believing in the death penalty.
a lot of us believe that a woman has a choice as to whether she has a baby or not while simultaneously believing the man has none.
a lot of us believe in hell while simultaneously committing "sins".

I wouldn't say murder and the death penalty are really the same thing...And there's no way in hell I'd want to live forever.
