    As for as Off the shelf brands are concerned, most of them are built poorly.

    Your right in thinking of Alienware and Voodoo, I've only had an Alienware once, But it never failed me.

    I don't usually reccomend them, Sheerly because of the price, But in your case.. Its the reverse.

    Im from Uk, and So i know a few UK companys that do very decent Custom Laptops, thought im guessing your not from UK, in which fact if i posted any links they'd be useless.

    If im wrong, I will post.

    I would highly reccommend something like this;
    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/149335

    It has a great usage of ram (even though you will only need 3gb) I think It is 1000mhz but you could easily overclock the RAM if not. The extra 1gb RAM makes this laptop 'future proof'.

    The graphics card is a 3200HD ATI, good when It comes to gaming. Can play all the modern games like crysis, call of duty five etc etc.

    The CPU is rather good for a laptop, dual core @ 1.9

    Overall this PC for £390/ $580 Is very generous, also comes with a built in webcam.

    It's a dual core...

    Plus laptops are different to Desktops, they wont have as powerfull hardware.

    This is because they have to use less energy and other reasons. So as laptops are concerned this is a very good CPU

    New laptop for christmas

    TBH when u buy alienware your spending about 25% of your buy on the fancy case, lighting system and ofcourse the brand name. However if you want the best bang for the buck then go for a sager. If that dosn't intrest you, then mabye Ibuypower.com or somthing similar will because you can hand pick almost every part that goes into your system.

    Hope that helps :p

    Ibuypower=fail.

    My cousin bought a computer from them, with an extended warranty they didn't fix anything, and the motherboard was the problem. I tried connecting the default hard drive to my computer, all correctly connected, in the right place, and it almost started on fire. DON'T BUY POWER!!!

    And Macbooks are awesome when you load them with XP.

    Ewww @ Alienware... Just no, no.... Bad boy, back away from the over-priced gaming rigs! If you want somethat you get get good performance from, then get something from Vigor, my friend just got a gaming laptop w/ vista, will run anything smooth. It runs Crysis on high-quality smoothly.

    Not the same one he has, but I have used this one before. Runs a lot of programs flawlessly.
