If you run an outdated server that means everyone who wants to play has to outdate their own versions and that can be too much of a hassle for some people.

Simplest question would be, would you run Vanilla or Modded (FTB)? Like you would have to have rules that run within it. Dedicated mods/admins on the server and/or monitoring it - Especially if it got popular.

However, I do not think that it will get that popular... The last server I played on (Jailbreak) was up for a couple of months (possibly 20 people on MAX at a time) and then got canned.

On the other hand, if it got popular... You may be able to bring in some sort of funds from it (yes, I paid for special privs on the last server), new people to Sythe, and possibly new donors.
 
Possiby make a Voltz or FTB server. Normal Minecraft is too short for players to want to play more than 3 or 4 times.
 
Minecraft is soft of dying in my opinion, people got bored of it.
 
Minecraft is only getting bigger and bigger and the numerous ways to change/modify it is rising.
