I have gotten caught twice by my isp for illegal downloading.
First was SimCity 4, second was Crysis 2
Both times I was using uTorrent from public torrent sites like TBP and a few others.
Since this, I have been looking into a way around getting caught. Since it's not your isp that catches you, but something from the Digital Millenium copyright whateverthefuck. They get your IP and tell your isp that you're downloading illegal software or videos. Your isp in turn tells you to knock it off. Because they "have to" legally. It is still up to them whether or not there are any consequences and most ISP's operate on a three strikes policy, such as Comcast.

Basically, If you encrypt your torrent traffic, use PeerBlock, a proxy when downloading the .torrent file, and a few other things, you can't get caught. Or so I've heard and haven't been caught yet.

I know my provider watches my activity they always know when I'm using xbox live as well which is fucking creepy.

 

I think it's common occurrence & people don't tend to think of it as being illegal. I also live in the UK, but to my knowledge the average, everyday person wouldn't get prosecuted due to the vast amount of people that do it, & the time/dedication needed to execute such a high amount of cases, let alone the amount of money needed to do so.

The only people that would get screwed over would be the ones that run the download sites.

 

I've just sent my Laptop to Sony for repair, I decided to do a complete restore I'm not taking any chances aha.

Even though I haven't signed anywhere to say they can look through my system.

 

You don't get prosecuted, but your isp will send you a cease and desist. Or they can shut off your service if you get caught too much. You don't have to be running the sites. If you are seeding a major amount of pirated material, you will obviously show up as a pirate-r.

Because they can see what you connect to directly after you connect to them since in a sense, it's them connecting to it and you connecting to them... If xbox live had a proxy, that would keep them from seeing anything other than the proxy unless they go out of their way to dig deeper.

I've downloaded over 100gb of movies in the past year and nothing ever happened. The worst they'll do is sent a letter, they wont cancel your internet because they'll lose money otherwise.

 

I'm not particularly scared I've been doing piracy for more than 5 years now. Just makes me wonder the average user doesn't really know the circumstances of getting caught downloading illegal content.

I only got caught after downloading about 850GB - 1TB.

They WILL cancel your internets. Most places operate on a three-strikes policy. Trust me, if you get caught enough, they will cut you off. (with the exception of a few isp's.) One of the safest things you can do is to not seed after your download is finished.

 

I'm not too scared/anxious of it because I have a local ISP and I have a friend who works there, and he told me they don't even pay attention to downloads/uploads or anything their customers do. I have had the same ISP for about 7 years, and I download a lot, and I've never had any issues.

However, I have a friend who has Mediacom (very large ISP/cable company) that downloaded a single movie and got a letter sent to him from his ISP stating that his account is flagged and any illegal downloading will lead to prosecution. He switched ISPs to the ISP I have and hasn't had any issues since.
