    Do grades

Do grades represent a person's intellegance or are the completly worthless in judging what a person's know's because of if grades did say how smart a person was i would be the stupidest person on the face of the earth yet my teacher's keep calling me smart so what do you think about this

    Do grades

Grades can show intellect. Many people can be smart, but just don't show it. For example, they could just be really lazy.

    Do grades

Grades and schoolwork is half to do with knowledge and half to do with convincing future employers that you're prepared to do shitty tasks for long periods of time.

    Do grades

Take this into example in my Science class, we had to hand in a project on last Thursday, and we wrote a test last monday. The class average on the test was 92%, and the class average on the project was 62%. Now, is my class stupid or is my class just lazy? Clearly, people know what they are doing on the test, but were just to lazy to complete the project. Therefore, smarts are not shown in the grades that you receive.

School grades reflect effort, not intelligence. You can have good grades and be a complete moron outside of school

They have some partial affect but I dont think very much. What if a genius is lazy and just refuses to do his work and gets F's? Does that make the genius an idiot?

    Do grades

I was thinking about this issue for quite some time today. Grades used to represent some form of your intelligence but they never did, and still do not, completely represent your complete intelligence. I began to think about this today when someone brought up No Child Left Behind, and asked me whether I think it is a success or failure. Well basically No Child Left Behind puts emphasis on a student's ability to take tests. Now this is why I am led to believe that grades do not fully represent intelligence. Intelligence is measured through not only your ability to take a test, but your perception of art, and believe it or not, your abilities in sports.

O.K. so since grades have no representation on your intelligence, what good do they serve? The purpose of school is to prepare you for life, and the competition you will face throughout. No Child Left Behind may need severe reconstruction, and grades may not accurately measure intelligence, but they are important. Chances are that if you fail to compete effectively in your school through your grades, then you will most likely fail to compete effectively for jobs in the real world and thus be stuck with the dirty jobs no one wants to perform.

Sure you can be smart, but motivation is the true issue at hand when it comes to school and grades. The higher your motivation, the higher your grades, and visa versa. The lower your grades, the lower your motivation (in most cases), and the worse off you will be in the competitive world. Your only chances at success with a lack of motivation early in life are self created success. This means instead of looking for a high level position in a company, your better off creating your own company.

The rules of our society and the competition involved in it were created long ago. Its the American Dream, the ability to control your destiny, if someone doesn't beat you to it. Grades do matter, but in short, to answer your question, they do not accurately measure intelligence.

(The above statements assume you live in USA, if not, disregard them >_>)

Well said, that's a really good answer. I myself have bad grades, but just because I'm lazy and I don't do homework/go to class, (no I am not emo, goth, punk). However whenever I do major tests that I rely on to go to a higher level class, I do good. To me grades honestly show the determination in school work.

I believe grades don't show that you are intellegent but shows how much effort you have. I'm very smart, I just chose to socialize in school than do work. When I do decide to do work I find it very easy. I could get straight A's but I don't apply myself and therefore I get average grades. (C's and up)

Agreed, I know plenty of kids who are absolutely stupid, but get A's and B's in school. By stupid I mean just slow in general, common sense stupid, and lost stupid. Then again I know kids like this that do horrible in school.

grades do not tell if a person is dumb or smart one kid could be doing well in a class but can't think logicaly outside while the person who chooses not to do work and fails might have the potential to do the work but chooses not to and can think logicaly

I definetely agree with slop dog. The teachers teach us what we need to know to take the stupid end of year government test. They do not teach us some of the things that would really be usefull to know or would be enjoyable to class. All they do is focus on what is going to be on the SOL(this is Virginia's government test, not sure if it is the same everywhere else) and we are lucky if we have time to learn anything else.

I believe that grades do NOT reflect our intelligence or if it does, it only reflects a small bit. A perfect example is myself, I am very smart (this is what all my teachers say, this is not really imo), but they say i just don't apply myself and i don't do the work. The thing is i am lazy and I know even if i do the work, i am not learning anything important except for what I need to for the government test. Last year I got a D in Algebra 2, but i passed the SOL with a 578 out of 600. (the lowest passing grade is a 400, pass advance is 500+)

Grades can't show you your full intellectual abilities. But they do show your intellegance in that particular field. But like with anyone if you have a bad teacher that can't reach you correctly or explain it then it's there fault not yours assuming you tried to the best that you could do.

As for the person who stated grades control your life. or something along those lines. you are very incorrect. If that were the case what about the people that inheret money from parents don't have to go to school etc. or drop outs that become successful like myself? By your standards every kid that has graduated from high school has a set limit on what they can do in life, which is not true.

Thats not true at all. although it takes effort to get good grades in school, and yes kids usually do act like idiots outside of schools but that has nothing to do with there knowledge if you put the effort into knowing more you are gonna know more than someone else that just acts like a jerk off all day and doesn't pay attention. although that person may know more in a different type of thing that the other person has no clue on. and fyi kids that have bad grades can be and usually do act like morons aswell.

you just showed how much of a idiot you are, why would anyone care what you are just if you skip class most normal kids do that same with the homework and being lazy thing. you just proved a point to me and helped me prove smr wrong thnak you.

If i actually try at school, I could get good grades if i really wanted to. But I'm just a lazy bastard most of the time and don't really care as long as i pass. I don't think I'm very very smart, but just a bit above average.

Before you start calling people idiots know your facts. Private schools teach
religion, how would I know this? Maybe because I go to private school that teaches religion. So before you think you know everything and start calling people names think again pal. Cause you are WRONG.
