Did Truman make the righr decision?

Do you think that Truman make the right decision to drop the atomic bomb on Japan? if you were him would you have dropped them or no?

I think he did... because who knows how much longer WWII would have gone on if it wasnt stopped. Comments?

^ Yes. If we didnt do this on such a large scale, the japanese would have just retaliated with something worse. At least with the a-bombs they knew they were beat.

 

I find it hard to justify killing hundreds of thousands of innocents.

 

I'm kind of in between.
It's 200,000 people's lives! All gone because of 1 bomb.
That bomb ended the war, though, and prevented more casualties.

 

*cough* 2 *cough* lol it was 2 bombs... Hiroshima and Nagasaki. They were actually small compared to other bombs that have been tested... I agree with clash... what about the thousands of civlians? THEY didnt attack us... yet we slaughtered them... But... also... things were definitly getting out of hand... Besides those were small... Little boy... the bomb dropped on Hiroshima was only 15 kilotons... Fat man... the bomb dropped on Nagasaki was only about 21 kilotons... 1 kiloton is the equivalent explosion of 1000 tons of TNT. So 21k tons of tnt... Biggest ever tested was 50 megatons... 50 million tons of TNT

Still... 200,000 people is just.......... ya know...

Well the war in Europe was already over, so it was only a matter of time until the Allies would have taken Japan. They didn't have to end it like that.

 

I don't necessarily think it was right, but it was effective. Japan got into a war with us knowing that people would get killed, but they did anyway. Although I don't think they knew we had the atom bomb.

 

Obviously - the Manhattan project had finished in 1945.

 

Fuck with the best die like with rest. Had to be done.

 

The US didn't develop the atomic bomb all by themselves...

Like SMR said... we didnt have it at the time... but Did those thousands of civilians get into a war with us? You gotta remember many thousands of those 200k deaths were civilians... If it were all military peeps then this thread wouldnt exist...

 

I think its was a huge mistake

it showed the world how powerful these things can be, now afterward that we used these bombs, we are trying to prevent places like the Middle EAst and north korea from using the same thing we did. Is that wrong?

How many of you knew that there was a planned demonstration to show Japaneses officials the power they possessed, and the demonstration would attempt to have convinced Japan to surrender without a single shot fired?

Im guessing it was necessasry for ending the war plus they attacked first. If we did nothing we would look like pussies.

Also I think that before they dropped the bombs the dropped fliers saying they were gonna get bombed. Just that no one took it seriosly and stayed, and then later died.
