[denied] Sythe VoiceScape Server

Hello my colleagues and comrades.

doodiecrust here today with a friendly suggestion.

Recently a new plug-in was released on Runelite called VoiceScape allowing you to communicate with one another in game via voice chat.

I think this would be an excellent opportunity to discuss politics, world matters and geography (my favorite country is Niger), our daily lives, forum topics, and much much more!

How easy is it to setup a server?

 

The server is open source on GitHub. You'd have to set up port forwarding on your router if you'd like to host it off your home network. That would essentially mean giving out your IP to other people so they can connect to your server. It also means that you can collect people's IP addresses if they connect to your voicescape server. I do not think many people would be inclined to sign up for such a thing.

Overall a poorly made suggestion.

Per the Github PR for voicescape:



The creator of the plugin is fairly opinionated of Voicescape's use case, which is for it to serve as a proximity chat in-game rather than something anyone can join and start chatting on with anyone like Discord.

This would also mean people will need to specifically bring their RS accounts to the same location to interact, and regardless of whoever hosts it, would be able to collect people's RS usernames + use their IP's to match names to locations of the accounts. There is potential for misuse, but even disregarding that, is not a fill-in for Discord, and would require people to go out of their way to meet up in game just to use voice chat.

Some additional context: there appears to be sentiment of wanting to find an alternative for Discord since mods have recently made a stance against using racial slurs in it, and have enforced it to some extent. OP might be one of such people.
