[DENIED] Add a Banned Name Section on Runescape Name Sales

Just add a list like the banned account sales thread that all the name traders can contribute to. ATM, only really major name sellers know what's been sniped/scammed before and these things are only posted on trading discords that have been banned from being advertised on Sythe.

It shouldn't be a mystery to newcomers whether someone was actually selling a recovered name in DMs or not in case they don't want to go through someone's trading discord or a MM.

 

This is actually mainly to serve as a deterrent to buying one of these accounts. As the original owner will never change and will always carry recovery risk. As an added bonus if its a personal email, some users who get background checks for jobs can come up on this search. Its caused a few members to rectify their wrongs.

This has been suggested before and while it would be nice it would be very difficult to manage.

Names posted would need to be supported by a valid report on Sythe. The issue we run into is names move and new uninformed users can be sold a sniped/stolen name without knowing it, then when they decide to sell the name, they would get into trouble on Sythe.

Do you have a suggestion on how this would be managed?

 

I personally haven't seen too many issues of newcomers "accidentally" selling a sniped or stolen name, at least from my time name trading. It's usually the same scammers who are using alts and are trying to sell it again.

The priority in my opinion is putting recovered names on the list first.

ex. Joker, Champion, 911.

They'll probably always be recovered and won't be transferred, so not too much time put in there. We saw the Joker/Champion incident happen a couple weeks back where a lot of the name traders & newcomers made offers for it until Vivi or someone else said that it was a recovered name couple days in. Staff time going into verifying reports of those incidents and perma-posting it shouldn't be too much of a problem. The same owners might go around DMing others a year or two later and newcomers who weren't there at the time might get scammed in the future.

As to the issue of selling sniped/recovered names and verifying it, would it be possible to form a consensus based system (like a permissioned blockchain), where a couple name-sellers could help update the lists/agree on something with Mod oversight and staff would be able to post it after a final review. Usually incidents with name sniping etc. go to players like Alex/Assassin rather than Mods during this time. I'm sure some of us will be happy to contribute and form standard guidelines revolving reports of these things so reports can flow through players -> a group of namesellers -> mods. It wouldn't hurt to assign a new local mods to for tasks like these too.

IMO even I get confused whether I can buy a name or not so I need to PM a couple other ppl then dm people like Video if something is wrong (takes up time too with situations like these). There really needs to be some type of streamlined system for things like this in general, anyone else can chip in if they have other ideas.

 

Yeah this is a tough issue. I decided to make a "Names to Avoid List" In My Discord to combat this last year. What I have learned is that people will still buy these names no matter what which is the sad part and just to resell for more instead of help the victims. We cannot know whether these people INTENTIONALLY purchased a sniped name or did so unknowingly. I find most of the time they do know but lie and say they "had no idea." There is no way to verify this for certain. Many names in my names to avoid list have circulated back into the Market one way or another after switching hands a few times. Many are hoarded on the same accounts. Here is my solution,

There can be a names-to-avoid list for Sythe but it would have to be closely monitored by Mods. If one should be made I believe that @Pendulum should handle it as he has the most experience in the Names side of things when it comes to trading. The list would be of names that have been recovered like @amyrs1356 states. Or names that are still ON THE SAME ACCOUNT that they were sniped on. This would need to be supported by evidence of the trade and proof of ownership of the name. We can even add names of well known impostors and track the accounts. Of course this can also be hard to verify 100% due to many people loosing their names when they try swapping it themselves between accounts and not preparing for loosing their name and not having adequate proof they have owned it in the first place. If the name were to move accounts then it should be removed from the list. Why? Because there is no way to verify the sniper still is in possession of the name, unless they use the same Discord or something. Like Pendulum stated they would come to Sythe and be shocked to get in trouble when they legitimately purchased the name. Now this sucks because Snipers can get around this by moving the name around to another account and pretending to have bought it "from a friend" unknowingly. This can be good because many of the name snipers themselves are reluctant to try to swap their name as most of them probably use scripts and know almost nothing about transferring themselves. This is also good because many sniped names are still on the exact same accounts. In that case a mod can have an account watching every names status and regularly update the list based on whether a name has moved or not.

Even with everything I have stated above, like @Andy mentioned it takes up a ton of staff time that more likely can be utilized elsewhere. It could work in a way that I explained above but it wouldn't be easy to run at all. If anyone has anything to add please do so as I think it would be very nice to have for Sythe.

 

Support, if it’s evident beyond reasonable doubt that it’s not sniped by someone else and the owner of the name attempted to scam/scammed.

 

Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't there one in the past? I assume as stated it's very difficult to keep it updated and tracked. I feel like I remember seeing "X" on it and learning how many times it was scammed, as I usually always used it on RSPS'.

If somebody could happily dedicate the time to managing it then I don't see why not.

 

Give @Assassin sectional mod for rs name section and let him manage it. Guy is solid in my book

 

I support, maybe like report a suspected sniper also agree with Pegasus
From what i know, Assassin and ALEX both work well together and i know they'd do great at managing something like a name mod

Honestly, this is my thought exactly.

I was reading through comments preparing to post, "good idea in theory.. too much work, too hard to verify with concrete evidence, etc. etc."
However, if someone who is versed in the name sales world is willing to take on that responsibility then I think it would be a good idea.
The thread could be stickied and continually updated by the creator. Said person being a staff member would definitely make it easier, but I'm not even sure they have to be a staff member.

 

I would gladly take on the responsibility of keeping a list for Sythe, as I already have one in my Discord and with some help I can maintain it and update it just like I already do daily. I just am not sure if my idea of how a list can work sits well with current mods and upper staff. Up to them but I truly do believe it can really help the name community and make it less of a gray area that exists in Name Sales currently as well as making it a lot harder for snipers/scammers to get around and sell their stolen names freely. I definitely view that as a positive.

A good example is this report. Someone was trying to sell a scammed name that @Andy posted. I noticed and filed a report because he was a clear ban evader. In cases like these, a list can be evermore useful.

This is my only issue with the suggestion. Hey, something is better than nothing, though.

 

Support aswell, I think that this forum should monitorize that section a little bit more so that would be a good update.

 

Unfortunately there are too many difficulties with name snipes/steals for us to implement this
