Photoshop is the best, I was able to download it for free a long time ago, you may be able to find a download link. http://www.sigtutorials.com/ is a great place to start and get your bearings. Hope I helped.

Yes, photoshop will indeedy be your best go.
If you wish to go even more advanced you can also check out cinema4D at www.maxon.net, another good relative will be 3Dmax, haven't ever tried out that one tho..

I believe photoshop is expensive, but it's well worth the money if you're getting into selling GFX's.

There are also trials available, if you want to give those trials a shot; go do so! They're available @ www.adobe.com and www.maxon.net :)

I believe that kin uses cinema 4D to create his 3D work. IDK if he uses Photoshop to give touchups or not

Yeah, I do use Cinema4D for my 3D works and photoshop for both touch-ups and the shiny stuff I use.

Gimp is really good considering it's free when you run out of the photoshop trial or don't want to pay for it. Of course tutorials for gimp are a little harder to find, but I'd say it's worth a shot since it's free. You can get it here: http://www.gimp.org/ I don't think you can do the Cinema4D stuff with it though.

Edit: By the way you can get a lot of renders from here: http://planetrenders.net/ and if you join the forums, there's a lot of good free tutorials. After you get more active you get access to stocks, brushes, and other free sources. http://www.dafont.com/ is a good site for text also. Good luck!
