That's actually something I'm not sure about. Some say that the fabric of space-time is stretching, and others say that it's just the galaxies moving part.

That would be true if beaches did not erode away the land over time. However, islands gradually shrink on all sides because the waves are gradually breaking it apart. This happens on continents as well, but the plates are replenished by the Earth's mantle.

Well, by that logic, I could claim any evolutionary textbook to be "evidence".

With the first reasoning, wouldn't this be expanding our lifetime, since time is strecthing.

Galaxies moving apart, wouldn't we see evidnece of planets also moving apart?

This is something that I have never been taught in school, by my thinking it would seem that the sand is just constantly compacted perserving perfect speciments of fossils, thanks for the info =]

Thats why I don't present it as evidence.

An interesting idea, though our perspective would change also.

At first glance, yes, but at the galactic level, it turns out that gravity "overrules" this expansion so that the galaxy stays together.

I can see where you're coming from, but this is one of those things that isn't the way it seems.

    Ah, ok.

In what sense would our perspective change?

What about galazies at the border line of having a gravataional pull on one another. If the universe is pull them apart, and gravity is pulling them together, would they conter-react and remain stationary, and appear to be growing closer together in our perspective, because we are all pulling apart.

    Yes, I can understand that.

If every single thing in the universe becomes twice as big, we wouldn't notice anything.

That would seem to make sense, but the distance between them is such that gravity isn't really doing that.

I am saying that time itself could possible be expanding.

Galaxies often drift closer to other galaxies mostly spiral I believe, and often form into one larger galaxy. The larger of the two often remain the center of the the new galaxy, and the smaller of the two, is devoured (for lack of better term) by the other. I saw a show about it on the History Channel I believe.

It could be, but if that were the case, everything would be expanding, so we wouldn't notice anything.

Yeah, it's supposed to happen with the Milky and Andromeda in roughly five billion years. It's not terribly common, though. For the most part, they're drifting away from each other

Why is it that if time is expanding, that everything else expands. I haven't taken physics yet, I am only a sophomore. Is there a law that connects time to mass?

meh we won't be around long enough for that to happen, doesn't really bother me.

Well, what I meant to say was that if everything expands, then we notice nothing. It wouldn't happen, though, because of the local effects of gravity.

That's true. It's still interesting to think about, though.

I understand what you're saying, but what I was saying, is that what if the expansion on the universe is simply the input of time, or the slowing down of time, since time is becoming stretched.

    yes it is, lol

So what do you think about that meteore thats supose to pass very closely to the earth in 2033

    I haven't really thought about that; I don't know.

From what I've heard, it has around a 1/45,000 chance of hitting us. Probably not too much to worry about, but I really hope I get to catch a glimpse of it as it passes by us. That would be fascinating.

Well thats the way I think :p

I thought it was less odds then that. From my understanding is that it is to pass between the moon and earth, If I am not mistaken. That would be an amazing site, if you were on the right side of the earth.

    not always.

depends on the current state of the material that you are stepping in.

and if you are talking about the inhabitants of the invironment, how do know that it wasnt a fish/bird and it took it away, dropped it and it broke?

    the point is, you dont

    edit/

    fossils arent made in sand..

they are made in sedimentary rock, tar and ice.

im also a sophmore and im taking chem, trig and what not.

Space time. I'm thinking you won't cover a whole lot of it in 11th grade physics. Point is space and time are only words. Matter and the time and space in travels through are all intertwined. There's loads of overly complicated articles and books on the subject that I myself need to read. But to answer your question, as matter expands time goes with it as it is a part of matter and the space that surrounds it.

Matter can't expand, matter cannot be created nor destroyed, expanding matter, is creating matter, therefore matter cannot expand.

    matter can expand.

just because you are expanding matter, does not mean you are making matter. that matter could have been here all along, and is being released

How do you think sedimentary rock is made?...

Thats nice, I highly doubt you are in trig.

I am forced by my school to take certain classes in order. I am not very "book smart" I only get B's or C's in all of my classes.

Matter expanding, how does something expand? you fill it with something else. you are not creating nor destroying matter.

It was never created, it has always been. It expands, but in what sense? Are you telling me you understand the forces of space and time to the point that you know matter can't "expand"? Expansion is relative.

On another unrelated note, I love how Christians deny most aspects of science but always fall back on thermodynamics...

Alrighty, no im not telling you that I understand the forces of space and time to the point that I can know amtter can't "expand" I am stating from a logical stand point, without much study on the materials, what I believe could be correct.

Deny most aspects of science? I deny dates used in radiometric dating, because these dates are only completely depending on the person doing that dating.

Name another part of science I deny.
