-is it possible to get great quality products without actually having people I employ to make them?
-is solely online trading a viable option in the sale of t-shirts?

yes there is somthing you can add to your site called "cafe press shop" which allows you to deign thousands of t shirts hoodies hats watches bassically anything and also allows you to add a company logo or any logo you wish, you can then sell them on your site and allow the customers to design it the way they want it, so in turn they buy it from your site for the price that "cafe press shop" sets and the info gets sent to the "cafe press shop" they make the shirt or whatever they order, ship it, and you automatically receive a portion of the money whenever some one buys, for example: "cafe press shop" is allowing you to pay $3 for a shirt but charges $10-20 on your site depending on what the design is. May be worth checking out for you.

(edit) you could even do more research and find out who their supplier is if they are not the main supplier and get it for an even cheaper price.

No point in shirts to be honest, there's sites where people can make their own for a fraction of the cost.

To me it all depends on who you know. I am in high school and there are several students that create there on clothing line. Some which are successful and others which are a waste. If you have friends that will support you and purchase your clothing and in a way advertise it, you have a chance of making large profits.

Online fashion lines are just to tricky to get your foot into. It's easy enough to get a brand for little investment but selling these items is very difficult. I had a line made in Thailand for poker based merchandise and struggled to sell my line within one year. After paying for roadshows and other overheads i made a loss of £6700 in the end.

Personally I'd look elsewhere. There is plenty of money to be made if you steer clear of crowded markets.
