Would you rather be poor and emotionally fulfilled in life or rich and unhappy?

I saw this question on Yahoo Answers, and I thought it was worth an ask.

The question reads:

I thought this was a very good question, I had to think for a little while.

I'll share, I'd like to see what everyone elses view on it first, though.

 

It depends, why would I be emotionally dissatisfied, or emotionally fulfilled?

 

Can you be 'dirt' poor and emotionally fulfilled? If you're dirt poor, you're likely living in poverty and therefore in unsanitary and unfulfilling conditions i.e. not enough food, etc

 

it's like my French teacher used to tell us: ''I'd rather be crying in a Mercedes than in a Honda civic.''

 

well the moral choice would be dirt poor and emotionally fulfilled in life, but id rather be rich although i would be emotionally dissatisfied i can change that. I can donate Millions of Dosh to people in need and maybe do everything in life. I don't think you can be emotionally dissatisfied with all that money. unless you don't know what to do with that money. Their are a lot of way's to satisfy your life. If you pick dirt poor and emotionally fulfilled i think its giving up easily, When your rich you can choose if you want to help people in need and its always satisfying when i see people smile

 

Personally I'd rather I was rich and unhappy.... Believe me when I say, being poor and jobless is no fun and that will eventually lead to unhappiness.

 

I guess it depends on your description of the word poverty. I know a family that is supported by a single member of the family and they are very happy. I'm sure they have times where they're financially pressed but they've come to appreciate so many small things that I've really taken for granted in my raising.

I would have to say poor and emotionally fulfilled.

 

People say because you're poor you're not caught up in the money and you know for sure the people that say love you and are close to you actually mean it because really you don't have much they can leech off you. Also you learn there are other things in life.
As opposed of not being able to trust people and looking out only for yourself making you kind of unhappy.

In my opinion being poor is not fun at all. Rich people seem pretty content with life. Look at Bill Gates stepping away from microsoft and just donating money.
Being rich I would support Carnegie's thinking, be philanthropist and end up pretty happy.

Can I start off unhappy and then change over time? If yes, rich and unhappy.

 

impossible for myself to be unhappy with money. my happiest times are with money.

not that money makes u happy, but hard to be upset with a ocean view house. it's relaxing lookin at the ocean, and would be pretty hard to be unhappy.

u can still be rich/unhappy if u dont know how to be happy and live.

 

I don't think he meant struggling to survive , I think he meant more a of a subsistence lifestyle, getting by but not having spare cash.

If the above is true, I'd take poor and happy. Really, the only reason I would want money is to make myself happy, and if this scenario makes that impossible I'll be poor... but happy

 

I'd rather be poor, but very happy.
That would mean that I am very content with life and that I know that money isn't everything in the world.

 

Once again money is the most addicting and toxic drug... it's not everything but unfortunately the world will always revolve around it. That being said the only thing I want in life is to love someone and for them to love me back so poor it is I guess.

 

I can't see myself being poor and happy. I would rather be rich and unhappy. I doubt that I'll be unhappy before too long, especially since I have so much money and a loving man in my life.

 

I'd rather be happy than unhappy. If money's making you unhappy you're better off without it.
