Could be CPU overheating or CPU fan not working at all

I checked the fan it's running and I tried letting it sit for 30mins before resetting it. I used it all day and nothing happened like this so that might be it

First, open up the computer and check if the fan or the fan vent is loose. If thats not it then feel around inside and if its hot it probably just needs to cool down. I'd recommend leaving it for a day. If there are still issues you may need to call in a professional to sort it out.

I doesn't sound like a software related issue, more like a hardware problem.
Did you download anything before it screwed up?

Not really. It was happening the other day and I reformatted. It stopped briefly but as I installed more things it slowly snucks it's way in. I used to be able to just reset and continue. Btw it runs in safemode if that's anything

i've had this happen to one of my clients computers. turned out to be a RAM problem.
    are you using windows 7?
if so, try testing your RAM by clicking the windows icon, then the search button. type in "memory" and select Windows Memory Diagnostic. select for it to run at next boot, and restart your computer. it should detect any hardware related problems with your ram.

The worst part is you don't know what is causing the issue. Since you seem to be able to get your mobo to post, try attempting a format by inserting a boot disk to see if it's a software error.

If not, it's most likely a hardware failure which means you have to narrow down which piece of hardware it is by swapping parts in and out from another computer.

If its freezing, I doubt its a CPU problem. Freezing is usually a problem with the GPU or RAM chips. Try bringing the computer to a repair shop and get the cpu and gpu reballed. If that doesn't work, reflow the RAM chips, that should do the trick.

But first try the obvious, check that the fans are working properly and that the computer is getting proper ventilation.

It's not a fan or electrical issue, or your computer would shut down.

I doubt it's a RAM issue, a computer won't fully freeze even if the RAM is low, and most operating system (when I say most I mean all from windows 98' up) give you a virtual memory low error message, and I doubt they are disconnected from heat to cold temperature expanding and detracting or you would have a non-existing virtual memory error message.

If your computer can run in safe mode, then it's most likely malware, or a driver was infected by a virus.

If you need to save any information follow these steps, if not skip to step 4.

    1. get a USB hard drive adapter (they cost like $10-20, but are great for hard drive repairs)

    2. Remove your hard drive

    3. Connect it to another computer, open up my computer and transfer the data in the hard-drive to an new folder. After your done extracting your information click on the hard drive folder and you should be able to format the hard drive. (this will wipe all information on the hard drive!)

    4. Put the hard drive back in and An operating system install disk along with the key. Boot from disk. Do this by getting into the BIOS either by pressing f2 or f12 right on start up, and changing the boot order.

    5. The operating system will start to unpack and prepare for installation. Let it install and follow the directions on the screen.

If you need additional help don't hesitate to ask. I'm going to school for computer engineering, and have fixed countless computers in and outside of the classroom. Hope this helped.
