Combo Box items gathered/saving to database

sorry for the very confusing/misleading (in some cases) title. Well you see I am making a runescape application and have a combo box that I want to remember you're last typed word/message. For this I want information to be saved in a .txt. But I don't really know how to make the application save the word to the .txt nor retrieve it and place it under combo box's items so it can be selected after the application is closed then opened.
