Yeah they're legit. It's some really cool technology. They've been around for awhile, but I'm not sure how well they've done getting distributed in a charity context. LifeStraw would definitely help a lot of people and is a lot easier than many other water purification methods.

I am planning on buying a couple before the next time I go camping.

I'd love to have one of these. They should distribute these to Haiti and other contries that have major disasters.

I think its great it doesn't use any chemicals to purify the water. It should help developing countries and improve the health of the people.

There isn't much I know about other purifying methods but just getting water in a container and drinking looks fast and easy.

Side note: I just want to buy one, go to nearest lake and start chugging.

It is legitimate. I actually considered them for prior art for an environmental engineering project I was working on this year.

I think its main constraints would be life cycle and manufacturability. The best solutions are generally the solutions you can teach people to make themselves in terms of impoverished countries. I'd love to see a life cycle analysis and manufacturing figures to see if they're actually viable on a larger scale, as well as innovative.

I've seen these on TV a lot, fantastic idea, I'd buy one for myself but I think I'd put it away for the zombie apocalypse.. heh.

In all seriousness, you never know what's going to happen and having one of these could save your life especially in situations if you're going camping like Pockets.

Even though it is safe to drink, it still doesn't taste good.

One straw can last 1000L which is nearly a year for people drinking plenty of water.
It also doesn't address the issue of people having to travel long distances to get water.

Depends where your at. I've drank a ton of "fresh" water.
There was one time I was in Washington state on a trip and we stopped to go swimming in this stream. It was the best water I've ever had. Better that the most expensive bottled water.

I disagree with lake water tasting bad. If you can find nice cold lake water in Canada it's usually quite delicious. Assuming you don't have to worry about beaver fever and by the sounds of the straw you don't.

I didn't say lake water tastes bad. I just said that water that tastes bad before it is purified will also likely taste bad after it's purified.

I know how great fresh water can be in nature. Earlier this year when I was in the Andes, I tried some water on the side of a mountain and it was amazingly pure and fresh. I later found out that just a couple hundred meters below, there was a bottling facility using that water.
