If you want to make a killing go for iron bars... I did that about a month ago and made 10M off it on my newb. (40 to 65 I think). It's 200gp profit (ish) per bar which is about 300/350k gp per hour. The XP isn't so great though :(.

Alternative methods, if you have the cash, are either smelting gold with goldsmithing gauntlets (Family Crest completion is required).. I think this is the most common method for those with cash, the gloves double your XP, but you do lose some money on the bars. Another method, if you have the money (and this one is probably slightly quicker than gold but again more expensive), is steel platebodies.

Personally I'd go for iron bars. Don't forget to be well stoccked with ring of forgings.

Do iron bars, then steel bars. Makes profit too.

I would say either making gold bars or doing cannonballs but cannonballs takes forever! :(

I just got 80 smithing, the keys:

    1) if you want pure profit, mine your own iron. as you rack up like 25k iron ore, you'll get all the rubies you need for rings of forging

    2) once you have all the iron and forging rings, make your bars [i used edgeville]

    3) sacred clay hammers, lots. each is 64k, effectively halves the work. make iron knives.

    from 76 to 80, I made 50k iron knives - 2.8m pure profit @ 58gp a piece

Personally I would superheat iron ore.

Costs a little more, but it works.

If youre too cheap to pay for the superheat, buy a lot of ring of forgings and just use the furnace thing in Al-Kharid, as the bank and furnace are very close to each other.
