backing up data on mac book help!

    backing up data on mac book help!
    I have a 2009 Mac book 13" with OS X 10.6.8 for those that may ask.

    I want to take all the data onto that laptop, transfer it to a USB or an external hard drive and then do a clean install. I never have any experience with Apple OS X. I only know how to use Windows OS XP, Vista, 7, and 8.
