Is Digital Painting Ever Used?

Just wanted to check if digital painting is actually being recognized over the internet. The people I know IRL don't seem to know what it is, but I was just wondering if fellow forum-browsers and GFXers recognize it.

In case you don't know, digital painting is basically painting from scratch; except it's done in Photoshop, utilizing its' various brushes. A (rather crappy) example is my avatar; my first and only form of art I produced using this method.

You also see digital painting commonly in concept art, such as the ones displayed on the Runescape website.

So do forum-dwelling GFXers do this kind of work in their effect-enhanced signatures?

 

DP's are widley recognized by the graphics comunity. Go check over at FFX etc
