Skills, what they're good for, and requirements

The following is the list of skills released by Jagex, maker of Runescape. I take no credit for these, only the explanation of them. These are completely accurate as of January 15th, 2008 at 10:38 PM -8:00 PST.

Combat Skills (These will raise your combat level):

Attack - Determines how accurate your hits are, and also a small part in the power of the hit. Also determines what weapons you can wield.

Strength - Determines the power of your hits, and also what weapons you are able to wield.

Defense - Determines how greatly weakened your opponent's hits are against you (All forms of combat are applied to this.) and determines what level of armor you can wear (these also play a huge role in the reduction of damage against you.)

Prayer - Allows you to use different 'prayers', or advantages. These range from protecting an extra item when you die to increasing your combat skills by a certain percentile. You can train prayer only by burying various bones and completing quests which give you Prayer experience. (Refer to the Runescape knowledge base for more information on which quests give you experience)

Range - Determines how greatly you can hit with a bow and arrows. It also determines what level of bow you can use and along with it level of arrows.

Magic - Determines how greatly you can hit using spells, which require runes and the required magic level. This is the only skill that does not affect the power of your hits, only the spells do. (For example, casting a level five spell at level ninety-nine magic would do no more damage than using the same spell at level ten)

Hitpoints - Determines your health points, which can be taken away by an opponent's strikes and restored by eating various foods.

Summoning - Little is known at this time, as it was just released on the day of my writing this. I can tell you that it allows you to summon 'familiars', or certain creatures. It is predicted they can attack opponents and aid you in battle.

Non-Combat skills (skills that are not directly connected with combat):

Cooking - Ties in to cooking. Determines how likely you are to successfully cook fish. This also determines if you are able to attempt to cook certain fish.

Woodcutting - Determines what type of trees you can cut and how quickly you get certain types of wood. Different trees give faster logs, depending on the difficulty it requires to cut.

Fletching (Members only) - Ties in to Woodcutting. This determines many things, mainly what level of bows and arrows you can fletch.

Fishing - Determines what level fish you can catch and the rate of fish per second.

Firemaking - Ties in with woodcutting. Determines what level logs you can burn. No financial purpose other than quest requirements. If there are no other sources of fire, burning logs are required to cook fish, so it may be handy to have a high firemaking level if you wish to cook.

Crafting - Determines what level jewelry you can cut, and many other things such as knitting leathers.

Smithing - Ties in with mining. Determines what types of ore you can smelt, as well as the types of bars you can smith into weapons and armor.

Mining - Determines what types of ore you can mine, what level pickaxes you can use and how quickly you mine the ore.

Herblore (Requires the Druidic Ritual Quest) - Determines what types of herbs you can clean and potions you can make.

Agility (Members Only) - Determines how quickly your run energy recharges , determines what courses, obstacles and quest points you can proceed through, and a variety of smaller things.

Thieving (Members Only) - Determines what types of objects can be pickpocketed from stalls and from people.

Slayer (Members Only) - Determines what level slayer gear you can wear, as well as the types of monsters you can slay.

Farming (Members Only) - Determines what plants you can grow as well as trees and herbs.

Runecrafting (Requires the Rune Mysteries Quest) - Ties in with magic. Determines what level runes you can craft. Many higher-leveled runes require a Member-Subscribed Account to craft.

Hunter (Members Only) - Determines what traps you can set, as well as catch certain monsters.

Construction (Members Only) - Determines what type of houses you can have, what rooms you can make and the furniture you can build around your house. It costs 1k off of the bat for a basic house.

These are the current skills. I do hope you enjoyed, and feel free to send me a PM or add my MSN: [email protected] if you have any information or comments on this guide to the skills of Runescape.
