    I've seen people go from 1-150K in a week.

    Why and how do people feel the need to do it?

    Money, actually. Sites like facebook, twitter, youtube promote users who have higher subscriptions/views/likes/followers etc, which means other 'real' people subscribe/view/like/follow and make the channel or page owner more money.
