    New Graphics Card

After 3 hours of time wasted on google, I thought I'd might as well post here.

I recently bought a new graphics card and motherboard. Motherboard contained a certain GeForce onboard card, and the one I bought is a Geforce 9800 GT graphics card. My computer doesn't seem to want to detect the external card while it detects the onboard one perfectly.

I've uninstalled the onboard one for now while i try to work this out. It's basically, when i plug the monitor directly into the card, the screen remains on standby and does nothing. I have to plug it into onboard for it to do something.

    Any help?

    New Graphics Card

I had the same problem when I got a new graphics card some time ago, I just took it back to the shop and told him to see what's wrong with it. He just told me it got loose, he didn't charge me.

Try re-attaching it and make sure it fits properly, be careful don't break it D:.

    New Graphics Card

A mate at school told me that the new graphics cards require a "digital" monitor. This is probably why it's not working, though any insight would be extremely helpful.

Try going into the BIOS when you start your computer. It will ask you to hit some random key to get into it...

From there, look under video/graphics options and similar menus for something related to the oboards graphics. Most probably there is an option that enables/disables whether it should check for a graphics card other than the on-board card and if not you may have to disable the on-board completely.

I tried that last night, there were 2 options. Enable unless some slot if occupied, or always enabled. There is not option to completely disable it.

Just out of question... you did install the drivers for the 9800 right? I've got an onboard card and the 9800, and I had to install the drivers for the 9800 before it would display on my monitor...

You would select the option enabled unless the graphics slot is occupied (which it is)...

You have to enable the PCI-e slot before you install the card.

Check any make sure you have the output coming from the card where it has the slot on the back of the computer, then you run the drivers and stuff.

Heh, thought you meant rotten egg... :D

Yes I did, but I downloaded them off the nVidia site. Did you get a cd with yours?

That was the default option... lol

    It is enabled...

How can I run the driver if I can't see anything?

OK. So you have your card installed in your computer, and it is enabled. You should be able load up your OS, just not play any games or such... Then install your drivers.

Can you get that far? Or am I getting to far ahead?

Also, what input is your monitor? (e.g DVI, HDMI,)

Place both cards into your PC, then upload the drivers for your new one. Delete drivers for your old one, and it should work perfectly.

    Hello Miss799 Apprentice

    New Graphics Card

Fire up your OS, install your driver! Or is it the screen is blank when you turn on your computer?? If it is blank you either have a bad card, or you have selected a wrong option in the BIOS. Do some trial and error until you get it right!

ALSO, what motherboard do you have? If it has more than 2 PCI-e slots there is usually a "primary" slot you have to use for the video card. I'd read up on the MoBo manual.

There's only 1 slot. The screen is blank, ie on standby. What wrong option could I have selected? And that's not necessarily true, my brother's onboard is on standby by hit graphics card works normally...

OK, I'm running outta ideas lol...

Did you plug your VGA connector to the onboard video port instead of the VGA port on your video card?

The point is, when I plug it into the video card, the screen goes to standby and doesn't have an image on it.
