[RSGP/PP] 8th grade, Year 9 My Jazz assignment homework! [ASSIGNMENT!]

Alright I really got to get a A++ despite getting a 3B (no practice) for my performance with my partner getting a extremely low score especially when I learnt piano for 5 years. I really need help. I'm only 13 so you good brainy teenagers should get a glimpse of this. Okay this is exactly on how the sheet says.

Jazz 9 band - Jazz Assignment

The assignment must be entirely in your own words (Not just copied and pasted, with a few big words changed and other words swapped around or added.

A reference list must be included at the end of the assignment. Include all website addresses visited, titles and authors of books used.

    1) Give five features specific to jazz music. (What makes jazz different to other music styles?). You may include information on rhythm, instruments, performance, techniques, harmonies and any other special characteristic of jazz.

    2) List the instruments most often used in jazz

    3) write down the name of a jazz musician who plays the same instrument as you (I play piano). Also give the titles of at least 2 jazz pieces he/she has played.

    4) Discover where jazz originally came from and how it developed.

    Where did it begin?
    When did it begin?
    Who introduced jazz style music?
How and why did the jazz style come into being?

    5) choose three types of jazz and describe the unique aspects of each one. (How is each one different?).

Jazz Styles: Dixieland, Bebop, Big Band, Rag time, Fusion, Free form, Progressive, Blues, Cool Jazz.

    6) Choose one person from the following list and explain how they have contributed to the world of jazz by answering the questions below!

    1) Give five features specific to jazz music. (What makes jazz different to other music styles?). You may include information on rhythm, instruments, performance, techniques, harmonies and any other special characteristic of jazz.

Syncopation (i.e. ragtime (Maple Leaf Rag, historically huge) and hemiola pattern with strong downbeat)

Improv (nuff' said. You can do this yourself)

Call and response (not completely jazz based, although it is prevalent amongst jazz musicians. Try the album here.)

Usage of minor keys in music to create dissonance (if you need help pm me or contact me)

Large variations in sizing (a weaker point; although you can have a jazz duet or big honkin' brass band similarly to a piano duet in something like Marcello or the New World Symphony. You may replace this.)

    2) List the instruments most often used in jazz
    Trombone <3
    Trumpet
Sax (alto, tenor, bari, bass, e flat (check name))
    Bass
    Drums
    Piano
    Clarinet

    3) write down the name of a jazz musician who plays the same instrument as you (I play piano). Also give the titles of at least 2 jazz pieces he/she has played.
    Scott Joplin
    Maple Leaf Rag
    The Entertainer

    4) Discover where jazz originally came from and how it developed.
New Orleans. Cajun's moving when they were displaced from the war of 1812 and New France slowly began to develop this "new" feel. Over time (around the 1920's) this took shape, spawning artists such as Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, and Urbie Green to entertain the masses during the great depression. It was fed by primarily radio, making the younger generation at the time extremely rebellious to their parents.

    5) choose three types of jazz and describe the unique aspects of each one. (How is each one different?).
WTF. WHERE IS SWING YOU (insert witty profanity here)

Bebop-Characteristically has fast tempo, accompanied by a lead instrumentalist improvising typically making use of harmonized 16th notes. Try listening to Dizzy Gillespie (check spelling) if you need more help

Dixieland-Typically characterized by a lead player (typically a large bore trumpet) plays a melody while the remainder of the band improvises using harmonic patterns around it. Listen to When The Saints go Marching In.

Big Band-Large instrumentation typically played in swing. Melody was carried by a whole section, accompanied by others carrying the harmony. Evolved later to become dance music. Often requires a very diverse instrumentation

    6) Choose one person from the following list and explain how they have contributed to the world of jazz by answering the questions below!

    What list?
