s video cord fucked up

i have recently purchased a s video cord for my computer to hook up to my t.v. so i also had to buy an adapter to turn s-vieo into rca so i hook it up and when i boot up my computer it is in black and white and flashes uncontroably and when my log in page comes up it goes black. i have a windows XP home edition and my video card is a ati radeon 9600 series. anyone of your help would be apreciated
