Building your very own gaming PC

I read on Yahoo that there was a gaming PC that is as good as you can get and it can play 1080p without a struggle. I was wondering if i could really build a computer that is great for around that price. I've never built my own PC before and I do not have a gaming PC. I want to begin making my very own gaming PC that will support most games at high graphics with no lag at all and I wanted to know if anyone could help me out. ThaNks

What is your price range? Any particular games/software that you're looking to run? May need to include some more details.

Also, building a PC isn't very difficult. There are many guides out there that should show you step by step how to.

Building your very own gaming PC

In 2011 I bought a $1300 laptop, which could run games 60fps over 1080p at the time. Then in early 2013 I built a $450-500 desktop with a dogshit case, an older i3 processor, a cheap motherboard, power supply, 4gb of ram, and finally a radeon hd 7770 Ghz edition. It kept cool, and killed my laptop in gaming benchmarks.

ColemanRay, there are plenty of resources to help you learn to build a PC. From guides on part selection to videos of people actually assembling the builds. To the technology section for people to give you feedback and advice.

I spent about a week of over-researching before I ordered my first custom PC parts. A couple days watching youtube build videos while it shipped. And then once more while I was assembling.

From then on I pretty much got the hang of it.

Can't exactly build your own laptop. Well..... I guess you could but that'd be a pain in the ass and probably involve soldering.

Building your own laptop isn't really much of a reality at the moment. If you can settle for a desktop on the other hand, we can help you.

I built my desktop for AU$554 (closer to $430 US) and it plays most current games at 1080p no worries.

It can be done, just remember shipping & tax so when choosing the parts if you're aiming to spend $700 maybe shoot more around $600.

This site can give you some ideas of parts in your price range and basically around the amount you want to spend on a certain part in your budget range.

With the progress being made in technology at the moment no computer can really be expected to be "up to date" for more than a few years no matter what parts you put in it.

A $1100 PC could be good for gaming for at least a couple of years 2-5 and questionable after that. Obviously better towards the beginning making some compromises towards the end. The good thing about custom builds is that you can always upgrade them. Throw in a new processor and a second video card and boom your system is updated again to top of the line.

That is correct. Desktop performance is a lot better. Take a desktop worth $1000 and a laptop at the same price and the desktop will murder it performance & cooling wise.

Ah yeah I expected maybe 3 years or so ty :) but...

Its very reassuring to know I could update it relatively cheaply! I imagine you'd have to change the power supply, or add ram as well, am I wrong?

I was under the impression also that laptops are usually built in a factory and not designed to have parts changed, and while its would be possible to alter your laptop, it would require soldering, a lot of know-how, and would void any warranties.

Depends, if you give yourself a little headroom on your power supply's wattage doing something like changing the processor or adding a video card generally won't cost you a psu upgrade.

Adding ram is just purchasing a new module and pushing it into the motherboard. Eventually it'd get out dated enough that the kind of ram you want to put in isn't supported by the motherboard so at worst you'd have to change both. Most of the time we're talking about 5-10 years unless there is some exponential jump in the power of ram.

    Basically.

It genuinely depends on the laptop. Many are starting to move towards soldered CPU's, but at this time nearly all Sagers, most Alienwares, and the MSI GT70's, GT72's, and GT80's(unreleased yet) are completely upgradeable, aside from the motherboard itself. So, while you are limited to staying within one particular chipset, you CAN upgrade the CPU. FWIW, most current laptops nowadays have upgradeable CPU's still...even those from the likes of companies like Toshiba, etc. The GPU's on the aforementioned machines operate on what's called an MXM port, so you CAN upgrade the GPU's also. each of these manufacturers offers a laptop with SLI capability, so if you buy it without dual graphics cards...you can add a second one later.

Note though, that all of these are likely WAY above your price range. Nonetheless, I just wanted to shed the light on the topic, because it is a common misconception for laptops.
