2500k's and socket 1155 motherboards do not support triple channel ram, sadly.

    Great processor choice. I've got a 2500k.

^ Don't go with what he posted, his RAM is mismatched and the other components are much lower quality than the ones you already picked out. Also Delta, I'm not sure what you mean about overclocking the card, but I assume you either mean the GPU or the CPU... in which case, yes the 2500k is overclockable ('k' denotes that the process is unlocked) and the 6870 can easily be overclocked with a tool like MSI Afterburner.

You need to find a nice set of dual channel RAM because 1155 doesn't support triple channel. I'd recommend just picking up a 2x4GB set from Corsair, G.SKILL, Mushkin, etc. You really won't need 12GB unless you do gold farming or something. The differences between 8GB and 12GB RAM are pretty negligible in a home or gaming PC scenario.

Other than the RAM it all looks good to me.

If you know how to overclock or planning to, just fork out a bit more and get the i7 2600K. It's really a good CPU. I would recommend you go for Nvidia graphics card. 8GB Ram is more than enough actually. Dual Channel of course.
For graphics, maybe you want to get GTX 560 Ti or GTX 570 at 1GB.

12GB ram is overpowered since you're not gonna do rendering or video editing.

There's not much point in buying the 2600k if his main intention is overclocking considering that the majority of people turn HT off on the 2600k in order to get good overclocks... with HT being the only tangible benefit versus a 2500k. Seems like an unnecessary extra $100.

For gaming, the hyperthreading in the i7 compared to the i5 will make no difference. If you're planning to do lots of video recording, editing or perhaps even more intensive 3d modelling, then it's worth considering the i7. Even so, you have to weigh up it's slight increase of 2mb cache and utilising more threads for the 100$ price extra.. As far as overclocking, I haven't had the chance to overclock one of the sandy bridge chips as of yet. My last build had a Lynnfield chip, so it's been a while.

Planning to set up a similar rig to this one in the next month or so, but with a 2500k, a 6950 (may unlock it to a 6970 if I eventually get into the overclocking again) and some other parts. From all the reviews and forum posts about the 2500k, I'd say it's a fairly future proof and versatile CPU for your money. Plus it always opens the door to being overclocked if you ever really need it (or want to as a hobby).

Well ^ that point is true. Ok. You could use that extra money to upgrade to a better GFX Card.
