Let's calculate cost/performance.

I couldn't find the 980X on Newegg, possibly because it's out of stock. Either way though, I distinctly remember it actually being more expensive than the 990X ($1050 vs $1000) so I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt by going with the 990X here:

990X - $1000

The CPU he actually posted was an i7-980 (not 980x).

Oh, fail on my part. The point still applies though, except instead of it costing 3x as much it costs 2x as much for even less performance relative of the 980X/2600K.
