    Building a PC

Hey, I'm changing my AMD PC, to intel.

    Things I'm keeping

    Case
    Nvidia 9800GT GFX Card

    Things I'm buying in
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B004NTDXU8/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B003F8QKNU/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=UTF8&m=A1RBLI8BU7UB9Y

Obviously I still need a lot of stuff.

Can you give me links to
    - Good ram, supposedly this motherboard can hold 6 4gb ram sticks that are 2000mhz
    - Sound Card
    - Hard Drive

Other stuff that's vital, such as liquid cooling ;D

I want this computer to be able to run roughly 20 bots, and be super fast, hence the processor and motherboard.

    Thanks
    I_D_B

Consider looking at some EVGA Classified's for motherboards. They're pretty solid.

as far as ram, you're going to be spending a lot if you want 24gb of 2000mhz, so here's a few options..

2 of these for like $400
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231408

2 of these for about $500
(I prefer Corsair Dominator to G SKILL, but that's just personal preference.
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...yMark=False&IsFeedbackTab=true#scrollFullInfo

OR you could crack and get some slower RAM, which would still be good.

Sound cards are unnecessary. If you would like one, give me a price range and I'll pick out a good one. They range from under $50 to over $1k for some heavy shit so that's why you should give a price.

and HD really depends on what you want. How much storage do you need? What type of drive do you want? How many?

Maybe something basic like this for an internal data drive or primary/data if you want to partition it and not buy another drive.
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136792

For liquid cooling, if you want to just get a cpu block, maybe something like either of these?

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835209054

You're all set to run 20+ bots. But be more specific as to your needs when requesting part suggestions. I really don't know specifically what you want.

I honestly cannot think what would justify a £300 motherboard, and I'm sure that i7 is only a minor improvement in comparison to it's £200 predecessors. I would strongly advise reconsidering..

Protip - If you are from the UK (assuming you are by amazon.co.uk) get your parts from ebuyer.com

ebuyer cheaper? The 6 core i7 and motherboards are tanks though, I'd have more than just botting as the use...

Is there any particular reason you're getting the most expensive cpu on the market? You're paying more than 3x times as much for a tiny gain. Plus, a 2600k would be faster for anything that doesn't take advantage of more than four cores.

You honestly don't need to spend much on a motherboard, £100 tops. CPU and graphics card are the 2 things you want to go high end on, but nothing TOO extreme (like the 990X i7 Extreme). You also better be getting an SSD if you are spending the much on a computer

This would easily handle anything you threw at it
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Intel-Sandy...1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1317246168&sr=1-1
anything higher is unnecessary to be honest. Also consider it is less than 1/3 of the price of the 990x extreme, and only slightly worse.

I'm pretty sure Clash & Rawr are right... The i7 2600K is really all you need... HOWEVER, I would wait and see what the new core releases are going to be... If I remember correctly, someone on here had specs of new hex and octo-cores that were being released from Intel soon (Q1 2012)?

Also, get a SSD (as rawr suggested). The responsiveness of a SSD is significantly better than a HDD for OS boot up & processes.

Also, out of curiosity, why are you using a 9800GT in a computer like that? I mean, I understand it will be for running 20+ bots at a time, but don't you plan on playing some games on it as well?

Save money on the cooler, get a Corsair H60: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835181015
There is absolutely no need to spend more than $75 on just a CPU cooler... It will not get you anything (significantly) better than any other CPU cooler...
    ----- Better yet -----
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835181010
5 eggs, with 1.2K reviews... You won't get much better than that...

Okay, would the i7 quad core NON EXTREME be good?

And the motherboard I got recommended to me, I'd want one that can hold at least 16gb ram, and a CPU unit that can handle it.

@skateman - I bought the 9800GT when it first came out, for playing on steam with and cod etc. :D

i7 is pretty good, plus you should be able to OC it well with that CPU cooler... I can get an old Wolfdale dual-core @3.0gHz (2 gens prior) to 3.4gHz on air cooling... And that's running stable.

Since you said you want to play cod, I would imagine ydgaf about BF3, but the specs on BF3 are posted here: http://bf3blog.com/battlefield-3-system-requirements: Min is a DX10 card -> 9800GTs are DX9. MW3 is running on the MW2 engine, so you should be fine for now --- at least until more games start using DX10 & 11. :p

So my GFX card can't even run BFBC3? :L. That sucks.

I'll keep it as it is for now, might upgrade it in 6months tho.

    Price =/= performance

990X is just as good as the 2600k, the 2600k is actually better in some scenarios. The 990X is also on an old CPU socket that will not be getting anymore CPUs EVER. It's a dead socket. Socket 1155 will be getting Ivy Bridge CPUs in the relatively near future, leaving you room to expand/upgrade.

My honest advice, rather than spending like £1,100, is to buy the i7 2600k with a decent mid ranged motherboard like the ASRock EXTREME4 GEN3 (will support upcoming Ivy Bridge CPUs, and it has PCIe 3.0). That'll put you at about $500, which is like £375 maybe a little less, and it'll perform exactly the same if not better. Any decent motherboard will have 4 slots for RAM, so get 4x4GB modules if you want 16GB RAM.

With all the money saved, you can easily budget in a GTX 580 or even better, which will last you years to come. It should pretty much max out BF3 with decent FPS. If you were really feeling like spending that extra money left over you might even be able to get a GTX 590 depending on prices.

    What?

    edit:

Oh just realized lol. No I don't make them, Ivy Bridge is the codename of the new Intel processors coming out sometime in 2012. Sandy Bridge is the current lineup (consisting of the 2500k/2600k among others, but those are the two flagship cpus). Ivy Bridge is just my username.

Yeah, I went with what you listed as a base, but the 2600k and a 1155 mobo would be a much wiser investment as far as future proofing goes.

Sound cards are unnecessary, but if you really want one, name a budget.

And your GPU is crap, in my opinion. You can get one for under $200 that will easily outclass your current one.

    Because Intel is better?

Anyway, when you look to upgrade your GPU, depending on your price limit I would look at Nvidia GTX 560 and above as they rape anything and everything.

Oh and there's no need for an i7, unless your going to show off. Remember that the GPU is more important for playing games.
