Bodybuilding FAQ and Advice Thread: Ask your questions here!

Hey man I'm an average high schooler, 5'8" 184 lbs. I'm a avid lacrosse player and I'm trying to figure out the best way to get my body in shape? My legs are built just fine as i can squat 400+ no problem. My arms and torso on the other hand... not so much. They are strong enough where im not weak, but id love to be able to lift more and just feel more fit. Any suggestions on what I could do?? :) Thanks!

500+ lbs on squat at 184 lbs seems abit unlike ik a few people who squat around 525, thats an insane amount of weight. and they only can do 1 rep and these guys work out daily.

if you're wanting to work on your max rep what i used to do when i lifted was add 10lbs more every week to my normal workout, and just slowly work up you're max rep.

I don't consider myself fat, but I think with all the junk i'm eating, i could be in a lot better shape. The thing is, if i see chocolate, sweets, fried food, I think im only going to eat one, but end up eating the whole lot. Do you have any tips on controlling this behaviour? Any food that would keep me fuller for ages so I stop eating a few blocks of chocolate a day?

Low GI food will make you feel fuller for longer.

For controlling the behavior is mainly self discipline.

Everyone has his/her own perception and views regarding this topic.the size of different body parts can make other body parts look bigger/wider. For example, having a strong back will not only help you with chest, leg exercises, but also make your chest look wider/bigger.

I think it's a good concept but it only looks at body composition. As in, the concept says that there is no good for or bad food relating to changes in body composition, not overall physical health. When looked into more detail, the program is only "If it fits your macros" not "If it fits your macros and micros".

However I do agree with it to a certain extent but I'm not going to say that you should eat 2 double cheeseburgers every day to get 50 grams of protein. The other health factors should also be looked at. But it does state it is only related to body composition.

    Thanks for the question.

I'm not sure if this was supposed to be a question or just a statement on my thread. I do believe that muscles do compliment other muscles for sure. Having a strong core will definitely help you with ALL compound exercises. Being able to stabilize yourself at the bottom of the squat heavily involves the core and if it's not strong enough, you're going to struggle bringing that weight up. Having a big back can also make your chest look wider along with having big shoulder can make your whole arm look bigger.

I need some surgery on the stomach area in early July and the surgeon told me to put on as much muscle mass as possible prior to surgery.

I don't need any strength or tone, its simply mass I think.

I know I don't have a long time, but do you have any suggestions as to how I would go about this? So exercises to do and foods to eat.

    At my disposal I have:

    A local gym
    Money for food etc

    Thanks very much!

Is this a good workout schedule? I've been using this for the past 3 weeks.

Monday Rest, Tuesday - Thursday Workout, Friday Rest, Saturday - Sunday Workout.

    Then it resets.

When it comes to being skinny, I'm as skinny as they get. At 5'8 110lb and 115lb at the end of the day after eating constantly, i still feel as if my bones don't grow anymore. I also drink water constantly throughout the day but miss my meals sometimes. I used to smoke cigarettes but i haven't had one in 3 days and am trying my best to stop it for good. I'm really hoping that will allow me to put on weight. I do smoke marijuana aswell but I don't think thats the reason keeping me SOO skinny. I just feel as if my bones are REALLY small with no fat on them making me look like a skeleton.

I'm working on eating 6 meals a day and I just bought a workout bench, barbell, dumbbells and free weights to help me get bigger.

I'm really looking forward to hearing back from you soon. Thanks alot!

Depends, do you have any previous experience? Currently height, age, weight, bench, squat, deadlift?

Get access to a gym with a power cage and follow a beginner program that involves linear progression. Examples: Starting strength, Baby lovers starting strength, JasonDB's 5x5 or any other routine similar depending on goals.

Learn the lifts, sleep at least 8 hours, drink heaps of water and eat everything.

Marijuana isn't the reason why you're so skinny. You're simply so skinny because you don't eat enough and you don't train. You can't expect to have muscles without training. It's not about eating 6 meals a day, its all about the amount of calories at the end of the day.

Focus on drinking heaps of milk, eating heaps of meats, eggs, etc. Get access to a gym with a power cage and follow a beginner program that involves linear progression. Examples: Starting strength, Baby lovers starting strength, JasonDB's 5x5 or any other routine similar depending on goals.
