It took me, a lot of wool... and cactus... and roses... and again wool

 

I didn't design it, my friend did, but I built it all the same (with another friend helping, thank fuck):





21x21 Mob tower. Completely dark floors all the way up to 64 blocks from sea level every 5 blocks. Mobs spawn, fall in to a system of canals, then fall to the bottom and die in the grinder trap. The loot is then collected in a nice little pile at the bottom for easy collection. Pumps out so much string, bones, arrows, feathers and gunpowder it was totally worth the day it took to build. Lots of cobblestone ...

 

Hey Swan, I've built something like that as well, but it's bugged in the ending, lol. I don't know, if you have experienced it too, but most of the time the mobs drop their stuff into the lava (so it burns away) instead of letting it fall down to the water. >_>

 

It happens sometimes, but if you didn't want that to happen you could easily modify it to be a drowning trap instead. The issue is they're often slower, so the speed of lava would compensate for the loot lost I guess. Either way, you're pumping loot out of it like all hell.

I also noticed that sometimes the loot seems to get thrown in to the glass and just stays there. Not sure why that happens.
