Pre-Xen you could combine 2 mini ranks to get a new one. I've noticed that's now gone from the user centre.

Was it just not popular enough?

 

The risk factor was never worth it because any of the two miniranks chosen to be smithed would've been worth more (sometimes individually) than the new minirank you obtain. I'd love to have it back because it was a minirank sink, but only if the model/algorithm of how it's done is changed to increase participation.

 

Sorry if this shouldn't be posted here but I never understood why miniranks cost so much and what the purpose is of buying them besides looking good on your profile. Once purchased are they hard to resell for the most part?

 

It's a liquid asset, it has hoarding interest/appeal, and as you said, it looks aesthetically appealing to some. Combine that with supply vs demand and you have your answer.
