    Rogues... :) Hehe. <3

    Assassination
It's a great spec for raiding, leveling, and in some intances, PvP. It's most commonly known and loved for its Mutilation Spell, which takes some time to unlock. I wouldn't so much suggest this spec for leveling, but it's always good to gain some insight of the spec itself. Assassination relies solely on daggers as weapons.

    Combat
Preferred for leveling, this spec provides great spells to the Rogue for multi-combat fights. As spotlighted, Blade Flurry is great, and often combo'd with Adrenaline Rush for maximum damage. Also, your option on weapons are somewhat opened, as you can use daggers, fist weapons, swords, axes, and maces. Axes and swords are preferred, but not necessary.

    Subtlety
This spec is mainly for PvP. It provides great options to the Rogue for surviving in sticky situations, and can deal massive damage with the proper usage of hemorrhage. There are also many other unlockable spells in this tree that makes stealthing as a Rogue much more convenient, allowing you to be less detected, letting you jump right behind players for quick ganking, and much more.

Try them out and see what you like. When you get level 40, take advantage of the Dual-Spec option, so you can swap between specs at greater levels for multiple team comps.

Lol at the replies so far.. things have changed, Go assasination as it is easily the best at the moment.

Combat lacks any real power at the moment and mutilate is gained through choosing the assasination tree.

Open with ambush(until you get garrote) and then use slice and dice(get the glyph) and mutilate until you have 5 and eviscerate.

Requires you to have 2 daggers.

What's wrong with the replies? Assassination does good damage.. but is best once you get Mutilate..
If you play the spec right, you can almost do as much damage as Assassination Tree. ALSO, Combat spec in its later stages gives a 4% buff to your entire group damage-wise.
You may use Eviscerate, but when your Slice and Dice is getting low, you'll want to use Envenom as well in your rotation to proc your SnD back to its 5 point duration.

I would suggest to go Combat early levels until you are comfortable with the spec. There are a few talents you can spec into as well that will help with survival, and really help out in dungeons by killing monsters faster. I wouldn't suggest this spec for PvP, even though getting Killing Spree is pretty deadly. Assassination Spec is fun to play once you get the proper weapons and spells, and can be a great way to boost your DPS if played well.

Yes. You can unlearn your talent points at any time you wish for a small fee of some gold. At level 40, you can obtain dual-talent specialization, whereas you can have a primary and secondary spec, making it easier to adjust for different team comps.

The maximum amount to pay to unlearn talents I believe now is 10G. It used to be 50G previously before some updates I think. Was pretty crazy. xD

You get mutilate at level 10.

I have bolded the key point here and also combat is crappy even at higher levels.

Your talking about a level 60 talent that if you would have read procs on eviscerate and envenom. Eviscerate does more damage output which is why it's the smarter choice to use while leveling up(also using envenom is pointless without the master poisoner talent which is later in your tree).

Combat used to be the way to go for leveling but it has changed and assasination is the way to go.

You can use bandages but the only way you can really use them in a fight is to gouge/blind them.

Use double instant poisons on your weapons as that will kill them quicker if your not already.

I know this. It was part of the upgrade of all the talent trees. You now get some of the best moves in a talent tree the second you select it. This doesn't necessarily make one talent tree better than the other at lower levels, but may for some.
It depends how you play it. I prefered to use Assassination spec in every raid, but we already had a Mut Rogue in the Guild with much better gear than me. Even so, he was pulling about 14k dps and I was right behind with 13k. Had I not been giving him ToT and my 4% damage buff, we might have done the same. (We didn't trade tricks as raid leader needed him to use ToT on the tank when they taunted, and he would constantly use feint and vanish if his threat got too high. I don't know why.. I thought it was stupid, because one of us was bound to have ToT up and ready for the tank switch.. or Hunter could use their distract shot.)
I know this. Eviscerate does do a bit more damage and does proc SnD. You're trying to make it sound like I don't know anything about Rogues just because I'm looking to get the OP some experience in at least 2 if not all 3 talent trees. If Combat Spec doesn't do as much damage, don't you think it'd be smarter for someone to try leveling with it to give themselves a challenge and to master it in ways of survival and damage?
It used to be and it still may be. I don't see a problem with it as both trees have their advantages/disadvantages. Unless you're using heirloom weapons, getting daggers can sometimes be difficult to upgrade. This is hard to believe, but I like the versatility of the combat tree. I've had to deal with it for a long time, and know both the good and bad of using it.

If you were the only Rogue in a raid group, do you think it'd be smarter to use Combat or Assassination? Obviously Combat. And if your raid leader wants you to be in that spec and you have no experience, I wouldn't be shocked if the person got kicked from their Guild.

    *EDIT*
Once you get level 12, you'll get access to your recuperate spell. If in the Combat Tree, and if you spec into it, you'll be able to go from monster to monster easily without having to worry about healing almost at all. It's a great addition to Rogues, and I love Blizzard for adding it.
Hopefully he has the glyph on that will remove DoT's to use this. Otherwise, it would be completely useless, as the blind would wear off right away.
Using double instant poison on daggers can have its disadvantages. I would naturally only use this technique when in PvP environments. Having instant/deadly poisons on would allow me to switch targets when one got low easily, as it'd finish them off while I'm using my high damage spells for maximum damage use.

I have no doubts you can play a rogue I was just answering his question and pointing out the facts of the assination tree.

Combat may give off a buff but it's also extremely easy to play, If he can adapt to playing a rupture dps cycle he will be more skilled and use the rogue class to it's full capability which is far more challenging then a dps decrease.

We could debate this all day but we both know that combat in it's current state isn't viable unless raiding.

Yeah.. I was just getting a little frustrated because we're doing two different things. You're trying to point out the basics of the tree(s), to help him get started. I've been looking towards mid-game and end-game, accidentally skipping over the beginner stuff. >_> Silly me.
It only gives a buff when you have poison on your targets. I don't find it extremely easy, but almost the same difficulty as Mut spec. There is a new spell for Mutilate that I really like though, with a 2 minute cooldown a believe. Vendetta? God, that is so amazing. xD Learning a rupture dps cycle though is very good. When I first learned how to play a Rogue, I was doing Combat Spec, and the best Rogue on our server ended up running into me and teaching me everything about rotations a few years ago. I do miss him though.
Haha. Well, at least I got that out of you. :) It has -some- use!

lol i am lvl 75 and combat, and man is it good :)...i go around a camp, do blade flurry, killing spree, ss and eviscerate so much fun :D recuperate is so good for rogues, they needed a skill like it, but this makes cannibalize useless though i think..
