    best rapper alive today?

Alright, this is a long ass post, but hell, it's the Music Discussion board, not the, "post a song you like" or "hey let's make another thread about who the best rapper is again guys!" board(s), so, I took it up a notch, and I hope you guys don't mind...I mean, hell, maybe you will even hear a song you haven't heard before because of how in-depth I went with my decision making, providing examples of why I chose each artist, ya dig?

I mean, I recommend reading it all and listening to the songs if you haven't heard them, if you like the modern rap game, and I'd like to hear some opinions on the decisions I made, if you agree or disagree, ya know? I love music, man, I dunno, lol.

Well, in my opinion, there are several "bests" out there, and here's what I mean. I'm actually going to post about the well-known rappers who I consider "top of the line" in a few categories, so most people can relate to what I'm getting at, ya know? So, some of my "Winners" so to speak, may cause an upset, but just remember, it's all opinion based - y'all got yours, and I have mine, ya know?

    The best lyrics: Hopsin; examples:
"Real" or "Deeper" meaning lyrics (Nocturnal Rainbows)
Lyrics with a good message (Ill Mind of Hopsin 5) *also see: Ill Mind of Hopsin 4
Lyrics with a comedic and humble outlook on his rise to fame (Hop Madness) *a track basically about him saying, "Yeah, I mean, I'm good, but I've been in the back of the line before, too. I've got a little fame, yeah, and you can like my music, but I'm not the only good rapper, so don't be tryna worship me (("You can be a fan of all of my songs, but just don't ride my dick though!"))

Explanation: The way Hopsin can go from writing one serious track, discussing how unstable society has become, or how desperate for unnecessary things we've all seem to become, to the very next song he writes addressing the youth and how the upcoming generation (late 90s babies, in general - those in high school currently, I mean, so don't get defensive if you were born in 96-99 or later, k), and how they have no goals, and live only to fit in, and seem to have no care of what their future beholds - which shows that Hopsin does care about real shit, not drugs or what gang someone is in, like a lot of rappers nowadays. And then he's got his comedic tracks, to show his light hearted nature. Flexibility in lyrical composure makes Hopsin my number one pick for this category.

    The best flow: Drake; examples:
A song where, though kinda repetitive, has a flow like rough ripples of water over a pond, just rolls with it, easy to bob your head to, chill and precise (Started From the Bottom) [Yes, I'm aware it's quite new, but it's easily the best example of his ability to pull off an incredible flow. There are many examples, but this one hit it dead on, in my opinion!]
A song, in which, Drake shows his ability to be flexible in his style (Drake's verse + chorus in, "I'm On One") [Important because a rapper with only one static flow in everything is dull, and will fall off real fuckin' quick, or should.]

Explanation: In my opinion, if an artist cannot maintain a flow throughout at least 4 consecutive verses on at least two tracks on a standard-length album, he/she is no good in this department. Drake is consistent with his flow for just long enough to where you can have time to get into it, then tweaks it ever so slightly, to remain crisp in his music, but not so much to throw the groove of it off, if you know what I'm getting at. While he has consistency in each individual track, his variety and flexibility overlooking an entire album, or a small collective of tracks, prevents his music from being dull and predictable, and prevents the very common issue with a good number of rappers, which is an entire album sounding like one continuous song throughout. Drake's ability to deliver a fitting flow to the meaning behind the lyrics of a song also play a great part in why he's earned his spot as my number one pick in this category.

Lastly, the best [for lack of a word for it] catchy artist: 2 Chainz; examples:
*note: While many think that just making a catchy beat and lyrics that an audience finds themselves thinking of, or singing, etc. randomly isn't "talent" and doesn't constitute a good artist in the music industry, it is actually backwards to that thought, almost! If a lot of people are listening to, sharing, and spreading the contagiousness of a catchy song, the artist is successful, because they rose to fame, on some level, and people enjoy their music (whether or not we admit it, we all enjoy a catchy tune we claim to despise, lol).

A track which captivates you with an introduction that is unique, and with the addition of proper editing technique, funny somewhat. (Like Me ft. The Weeknd) [which makes the listener want to wait and see what comes of it - boom, you're trapped.]
A track that begins with a slow beat, and progresses slightly early in the song, then slowly throughout, with a sudden complete change for the chorus (No Lie ft. Drake) [making the listener really get hooked on the chorus, making them come back to the track - boom, trapped.]
And of course, a track that can be played in a club as many times as they want, and people will always find it easy to dance to because of an attractive, usually simple beat, with a flow that lets a motherfucker just go in on it! (I'm Different) [Proper administration of a beat that's got an already hypnotic loop to it that plays almost constantly, underneath a varying beat, AND a flow that is slightly faster than the instrumental constitutes a song that people can dance to, or at least find themselves attached to somehow - so long as it's done well, and like I said, properly, you can't deny that there's at least one song that seems kinda off to you because the beat doesn't seem to keep up with the rapper, but you find yourself listening to it, and maybe even getting the urge to bob your head, or dance, or whatever. It happens to the best of us, mannnn. NO SHAME!]

Explanation: While 2 Chainz is definitely one of the most debated rappers in the modern game, where he's despised and viewed as a failure in the industry who tried too hard by a lot of people, the flip side of course exists as well, where people think his uniqueness brings a new light to the game, which they think has been desperately needed lately, it's an undeniable fact that even MOST of the people who dislike his music will say something along the lines of, "Yeah, 2 Chainz is on some bullshit, he's probably the worst rapper, *and so on, and so forth*", but then the kicker, they finish up with, "except that one song '[insert song here]'.", and you can put that to the test any day of the week, and I guarantee the majority of your test subjects will admit to liking at least one song by him, even if you have to pry at it, like, "Don't lie, you know you think at least ONE song is good by him", and they'll cave in, most of the time, unless they truly just dislike him, of course lmao. And guess what, once they do admit it, they will probably use the excuse that only supports my decision even further, "Yeah, well, I only like it because it's(or 'something about it is') catchy as fuck..."]

Due to his ability to draw in an audience with technique and, in my personal opinion, talent (which even I can admit, doesn't show in ALL of his songs, but in a good handful, you can see he has talent, but doesn't utilize it as seriously as people expect lol), and hold their mind in contempt by knowing just what people like to hear, whether it's lyrically or instrumentally, 2 Chainz has made it pretty big due to not only his songs that a lot of people, guys in particular, can relate to and be like "oh hellll yea", but his catchy tunes as well. This earned him my pick for the number one in this category.

    ---------------------------------------------

Honestly, I strongly considered picking Mykko Montana for the top pick for the last category on the basis of ONE song by him, and if you know Mykko Montana, you already know which one...but for those of you who don't, you can't tell me that the following track might just be able to be catchy and honestly fucking CRAZY enough to TIE with all 3 of the 2 Chainz songs listed, lmao.

    You decide!

    Mykko Montana - Do It

    ---------------------------------------------

The list could go on, and on with different categorizations of "best" artists, because really, where one artist falls off, another artist hops on, but they don't have to overlap, or replace one another, it's just one of them might write lyrics really well, and not have to resort to ONLY rapping about weed/pussy/etc., yet when he raps, the flow kinda has people in that, "it's nice, but could be better.." position, and the other may be able to rap with an immaculate flow, and decent enough lyrics (not superb or deep like the other guy, but relateable) to where people get into the track, and let those few lines that don't fit in the song kinda glide by, and still enjoy the music.

In the game, I've noticed that even though there are rivalries and shit, it's more like a big ass team, based on the concept I just talked about, whether or not two artists are at each others' throats, they may be in the situation described above. It's just the way the rap industry works, and always has.

Definitely an understandable thing, and I respect your opinion to do so, but if you'd have just read the explanation as to why Drake was included, you may have changed your outlook on it. I didn't list him because I am one of those "Y0L0 SWAG FUCK U ALL I NEED IS MY SNAPBACK" fanboy kids, but for actual, logical reasons to appreciate his work. It's really all a matter of opinion, anyway, haha. I just prefer the way his flow resembles running water, and is smooth as hell, but don't get me wrong, I also like a flow that goes in, that has a uniqueness to it, also.

Yeah, it was a long as fuck post, too, I didn't even realize it until after I had to scroll up to add the first paragraph to explain my reasoning, lmao. But shit, I'm a music geek, can't really explain it any other way, my bad!
