    Best book to learn C++

    Find some decent tutorials online, or find a university who posts its course materials online.

    I find most books are very basic and don't give very good explanations.

    Best book to learn C++

    First, buy a book from Barnes and noble. Doesn't really matter which as long as its not an advanced one. Once you've go the basics, and you've practiced a little I'd suggest using the internet to look up things you want to know as well as the book you bought. From there, find ways to integrate what you've learned into something new.

    Anything BUT C++ For Dummies.
    When I first started learning C++ a few years ago that was the book I got, I read the whole thing and was STILL not able to grasp advanced concepts or make anything more than just trivial programs that don't really help anybody.

    Look for
    "The C++ Programming Language" by Bjarne Stroustrup (Creator of C++)
    "Effective C++" by Scott Meyers (Professor)

    Also, please do not bother with any external APIs, including the Win32 API or Carbon. (Exclusing Boost, as a large part of Boost is becoming the standard), please learn the standard template library and the C standard library first.

    I would also recommend starting with C, then incorporating OO and the STL as you become more comfortable with C.

    wtf, if you want a headstart on the class, buy the required textbook for the class (seeing as most classes make you get a book)... either way you're going to have to buy that book, so might as well save yourself money/time.
