Is anyone else's life at home like this?

Currently I'm sitting in my room with my laptop on my desk, skype open, sythe open, maybe pop up RS for a little bit. However at the slightest hint of my sister, mom, dad, I'll have to close everything and open my facebook/reddit to mask what is really going on. The thought of them knowing what happens frightens how they'd perceive the picture. They found out in the past and blocked RS as well as other sites from the router, so I've vowed not to let that happen again.

I'm not sure why they are that way. I wasn't really a great student but I went to a difficult school and did all my service hours it required, I've never been a bad kid, I'm almost 18 and the worst thing I've ever done is smoke a little bit of weed, but they don't know that either. It's not up to them to decide what I do however they hold things over my head like my college tuition so I just roll with it and keep it on the DL. Is anyone else like this? My closest friend doesn't even know. He always wants to know why he can't touch my phone or my laptop, why I'm so private, but I'll never say, at least now now.

Curious if anyone is like this.. not making a tl;dr

I'm surprised that your parents haven't afforded you some more freedom now that you're 18. My dad was definitely against Runescape and other video games in general for the longest time. He especially was against internet usage when I was younger. But as the years rolled on he become less and less restrictive and it got to the point now where I can do whatever I please...save for illegal activity. :p

I would talk to them about it...you're older now, more responsible. It's not like you're shooting up heroin...you're simply browsing forums and playing a simple video game. I don't see the harm in that. Especially since it does not sound like you are addicted or anything.

Gunna sound like a bitch but. You live under your parents roof. Their house their rules. You wont ever understand them and its kind of a waste of time to try and understand them. Just continue to be on the DL until you have enough money to move out.

Meh I'm going to college in a month Imma just roll with it and live my life over there :p I'm a computer science major so I'm sure there's people I can talk about nerdy shit with as well as continue a relatively normal social life haha

I dunno what kinda stick is up their ass. I'm not trying to jerk my dick off to everyone but we've had top tier internet my whole life. I'm blessed with this and other things but the meaning of that is that there's no problem with the bandwidth.

Originally I was allowed to play back in elementary school but like when I got older they just said it was kids games and shit, when they caught me they mocked me about it. I dunno. One day I'm gonna be like "hey you know how I was in my room a lot? Yeah, I was playing games and trading online, all that good stuff."

What really pisses me off is their desperacy to get me off the computer. I'm in shape, I work out, I go out with friends. I just wish they'd fuck off and let me live my own life while still supporting me lol. Whatever, to each his own.

Lol sorry for you. At this very moment, My door is opened, I have two computers on and I am also playing on my xbox 360, I got sythe opened/facebook and other web-pages of my interest. My parents are okay with that I was a good student when I was in school/college, I never failed any subject. Now I am 20 and I have a job. My parents are still aware of me playing video games/rs sometimes. They do know that I got some kind of business with the game but they don't know about "firecapes" or anything related to Runescape. I used to play till 4am back in my school days and then I had to wake up at 6am to go to school. Yea I got told off many times but as soon as I didn't fail anything or get in trouble at school my parents would let me play anything I wanted to....So yea....

I respect that, but I carry my own weight. I slack off a lot but there's not really much to be done. I bring out the trash, I clean up my room when it needs to, I clean up my bathroom when it's looking shitty, I vacuum the stairs from time to time. We have a lawn service and shit though so no need for that..

I don't see what the difference between xbox and RS is though? I can go down there for hours unjudged :p

I'm the type of guy that'll be failing miserably and then in the end of the marking period/semester I'll have like a high C/low to mid B range (78-85) average. Dunno why I do it, but I've never failed. Just don't like doing homework lol

I applaud your attitude and outlook on the matter. Also, great major choice, I think you will really enjoy it. College will be a time for you to express yourself and enjoy being out on your own. For individuals especially like yourself it will prove even more enjoyable and liberating. I couldn't imagine my parents ever mocking me for something I do, that is just wrong. Everyone has their own personality and likes to do their own thing. If it makes you happy and its not hurting anyone or yourself (like not addicted or anything), then I don't see any problem with it. Yes, as Lame said, it's their house and their rules...but I'm surprised they're not open to giving you any say in what you do. I mean, I will say that it sounds like you were raised well. Maybe they are just overly paranoid of failing as parents or something..who knows. Or maybe they're just super old school. But yeah, you're almost free man..just lay low. Might as well.

Definitely not the failing as parents part. They're really good parents and I wouldn't trade them for anyone. I have a lot of shit that other kids don't have. This would be petty bullshit if I chose to argue about it. I've lasted this long weaseling around figuring out their passwords to security and stuff though.

    I guess I'm a unique case :p

So you're saying they prefer that you waste your time looking at pictures and playing facebook games and not really enjoying yourself rather than having more fun, wasting time playing another game?

Parents like to take away what you enjoy. When I was young I was in a similar situation. Every time parents walked by I would open up neopets so they thought I was addicted to neopets. When I did something bad they would take away my neopets so I would pretend I cared meanwhile I would just play RS =D But this was when I was like 13, you should have more freedom if you are almost 18.

I'm not insulting you dude, I'm trying to help you understand that you shouldn't be ashamed of doing things that are much safer than what you're allowed to do. I'm sure your parents are good people, no doubt, trust me they could be doing a lot worse to you - but like I said you shouldn't have to live in secrecy and obviously you care because you wouldn't have posted if otherwise.

Maybe sit down and discuss it, or just do what you do and next time they come around don't close anything and then the conversation will be started and open for you to explain your side.

Well I don't talk about Runescape with my friends or anything. My family doesn't really care except to the extent that I used to play it for 18 hours a day when I lived with them. That would obviously raise concern for anyone. My girlfriend has watched me play before and all that, but she hasn't seen me at my worst. I don't play anymore and I'm trying to keep it that way.

I always kept it hidden from my friends when I played Runescape. I remember in dial-up days, my parents use to unplug the internet over and over so I could not get on.

If you open up a bit more to your parents, they will trust you more. The more secretive you are, the less they will trust you.

Maybe when I was 13. I don't even live at home anymore, my parents live like 2500 miles/4000 km away. I have a room mate, but he doesn't care what I look at. I quit Runescape ages ago anyways. Even when I still lived at home my parents just stopped caring about what I looked at online.
