Is there any legit websites that do background checks for free? i applied for a job at a gas station a couple months ago and the background check came back as "Not recommended" .. let me remind you, i'm an eighteen year old going to college full time.. i have never done anything bad enough to give me a bad rep like this.... im really confused

Background checks don't come back in any sort of "recommendation" form, they don't say "recommended/not recommended". That's up to the discretion of the employer, and it sounds like a poor excuse for them to deny your application for one reason or another.

Anyway, no, I wouldn't trust any internet website that doesn't have a .gov top-level domain with the information needed to conduct a background check. No one will do it for free, because even your employer has to pay for background checks for other people. It would be a loss of money for anyone to offer a legitimate check for free

Background checks in America or for Americans have a fee ranging from $50-$200, depending upon the depth at which you wish the state to dig.

I don't know what you're looking up, maybe public court records, but I'm 100% positive all background checks cost money. I've ordered several after making assistant director at my old job when they were hiring more people.

I had to have a full background test/screening and finger print when I started working at a nursing home. The home covered the fee, but it cost them 109 dollars.

Yeah, most companies will pay for the background checks themselves when they're looking to hire you, but not when you're looking up neighbors for shits and giggles like psycho claims he can...

No this is true, my friend found a person we know arrest record. Then I doubted it and said it's fake and put in my fathers name. I know the arrest record for him, and they matched up. So I don't think it's complete bullshit. It could just be info from the court system or something and not a "full" background check.

Oh well sure, public court records can be retrieved for free. In some states, they can be searched for online too, but they only make up like 10% of a full background check.

For example, http://www.familywatchdog.us/ is a free service that compiled all sex-related court records for easier searching because those records ARE free, but yeah, background checks cover so much more

It means they are legally obligated to tell you exactly why you weren't picked. They're really not going to tell you though because how can you force someone to tell the truth when you don't have evidence that it's a lie? More often than not, you'll just hear "we found someone more qualified."

I've never really understood the reasoning behind this.. If you are in debt wouldn't that generally make you a better worker? What I mean by a better worker is, someone who will try to pick up spare hours during the week and one you can depend on because they need to pay off their debt.

Someone who finds themselves in debt is often irresponsible, bad with money, and sometimes prone to steal if their financial burden is too great. Is that someone you'd want to hire?
