Atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki

The atomic bombings of the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan were conducted by the United States during the final stages of World War II in 1945. These two events represent the only use of nuclear weapons in war to date.
Following a firebombing campaign that destroyed many Japanese cities, the Allies prepared for a costly invasion of Japan. The war in Europe ended when Nazi Germany signed its instrument of surrender on 8 May, but the Pacific War continued. Together with the United Kingdom and the Republic of China, the United States called for a surrender of Japan in the Potsdam Declaration on 26 July 1945, threatening Japan with "prompt and utter destruction". The Japanese government ignored this ultimatum, and the United States deployed two nuclear weapons developed by the Manhattan Project. American airmen dropped Little Boy on the city of Hiroshima on 6 August 1945, followed by Fat Man over Nagasaki on 9 August.

Taken from Wikipedia, the deployment of the bombs, as in your eyes - Was it acceptable for a quick ending to the war? I personally think that this was one of the most outrageous moments of that time, it killed so many innocent people.
Please post whatever you may have to post here, thanks.

That's what war is. A blood bath, killing innocents. I trust in the US, so I'm sure it was the best alternative.

Atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki

The japanese would not have surrendered and the ALLIES would have gotten there asses kicked if they did not do it. Im not justifying it but its the truth. I mean even after the 1st bombing they still wanted to keep fighting. It took 2 nukes to get them to surrender. Morally it was wrong but who knows where or who we would be if they had not done what they did.

Atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki

    ^ Partially correct.

The nuking of Japan was the only realistic option. An invasion of the Japanese mainland would ultimately result in the loss of millions more allied soldiers and the complete destruction of the Japanese people. Every civilian would fight to defend their home.

Even after the second bomb the majority of Military leaders wished to continue the war - it was only because of intervention by the emperor that the war ended. You can also note that the Japanese unconditional surrender was never mentioned as such to the Japanese people, and it was called a cease fire.

I think they should have started with a demonstration bombing to show them their capabilities.

should that fail to pursued them, a more direct assault would be practical.

Incorrect, They tested the nuclear bomb and in that way demonstrated their immense and.. monstrous powers to kill innocent people, this was Called the Trinity Nuclear test, it had the same concept as the Fat man device which was detonated over Nagasaki.

He is talking about showing the Japanese a demonstration. Not the USA.

I don't know in that timeline but i'm pretty sure that the Japanese heard of a bomb going in US as a test, they should've know that it was meant for them as Germany and Italy already surrendered, they were the only ones left.

Atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki

Tbh, I feel as though the atomic bombings were a much needed event in our history. They served as examples of how terrible and devastating nuclear warfare can be.

Japan may not have known about the US having atomic bombs, all testing and development was carried out in high secrecy. Rumours are that Japan refused to believe that the US had nuclear bombs, and were merely trying to bluff.

There was bluffing at that time, allot of bluff's, so i will agree with you on this, Russia did the exact same thing, so no one would try to invade their country.
It wasn't exactly needed, in my opinion it should have never happened and the Nuclear warfare ( Only warfare ) shouldn't have been invented at all.

I don't even understand how people get pictures of these kind of things. Learning something new here, didn't even know a nuclear bomb had ever been used in war!
    Thanks for the contribution :)

Look at what happened on pearl harbor . Thats was the first attack of its kind on us soil and look at the devastation that it caused, the nukes seemed like a good idea at the time. Im pretty sure we could have gotten the message across with one though, Pearl harbor was a military base and it got most/if not all of the attacking. The US on the otherhand completely destroyed a huge chunk of japan with massive amounts of civilian casualties, i hate how it happened to work out. BUT the US needed to assert itself as a place you dont fuck with, and it did and people dont anymore.

edit: i dont support nuking people anytime something bad happens. but understand the decision to do so, it was VERY effective.

pearl harbor wasnt even that bad.

most of the ships sunk were able to be salvaged, as they sunk at the docks.

2335 people died at pearl harbor

in comparison, 220000 people died as a result of nagasaki and hiroshima.
