Atheism: A New Way of Seeing God

It's not that science cannot answer the question -- given everything that science has taught us thus far, it seems very likely that it will -- it is merely that we have not yet attained an answer.

The Big Bang Theory explains the origin of the universe; it is not meant to explain the origin of life. While we do not yet have a complete theory on abiogenesis (the origin of life), we have made significant advances on the subject. Invoking a supernatural being to explain that which we do not currently know is not a solution; it merely compounds the problem, as you are left wondering what this being is, and how it came to be.

We know very well how the first atom (did you mean cell?) came to be. Approximately 300,000 years after the Big Bang occurred, the universe had cooled sufficiently to allow the formation of atoms from their constituent particles (as electrons are an elementary particle, and the nuclei had formed from quarks less than a second after the Big Bang took place).

If, however, you did mean cell, we have made advances in that as well. We know, for example, that organic material is commonplace throughout the universe (the carbon atoms themselves having been formed by stars). This organic material is able to form amino acids, as shown by the miller-urey experiment.

All of this is beside the point, though, as I do not claim to know how life formed. Nobody said it was just "there," nobody said it just "accidentally got that way" (to quote Bill O'Reilly). We say that this is an unsolved problem in biochemistry, and we are working on it. Simply not having an answer does not lend credibility to your argument that magic man dun it. This is an extremely poor hypothesis due to its unfalsifiable, as well as its inability to make predictions.

To illustrate my point, I ask you this: if I were to say that an invisible pink unicorn created life, is this a feasible hypothesis? You don't know how it happened, so does that lend credibility to this idea?

I don't think any of us are claiming to be omnipotent and that we know all and that God is an impossibility. There is quite a difference between familiarizing yourself with all of the facts and evidence surrounding the God debate and making an informed decision on what you personally believe, but that doesn't change the fact it's a personal opinion, and I believe the vast majority of people here counterarguing God's existence can fully accept that fact. We're not here to try to be arrogant and shit on your beliefs, only point out that they are completely irrational. Science has a much more detailed and scientifically accurate version of events. The only reason you are not able to see the irrationality is because you are brainwashed by the notion of God. Your God is all-known and life-giving, to call him irrational would likely be a sin in your books.. so you try to maintain your rationality by calling out flaws in a scientific theory. It is worthwhile to note that you are largely wrong in doing so, too. Jimmy has described how we believe the first atoms formed above. Also, he touched on life as well. It's all there if you take the time to research it (which you obviously did not). The only main question that it does not answer is what came before it.. which, when you get down to it, religion shares just as much. As such, it is more rational to go with the theory that contains the most accurate and repeatable evidence (Inb4 "u cnt maek a big bang in a labrotary!11") rather than the theory that gives you very vague and quite honestly irrational explanations of how everything around us came to be. We know the Earth was not formed in six days. We know the Earth is much older than the Bible estimates. We know man never walked with dinosaurs. We know that the universe is much larger than the Bible predicts. We know the Earth is not the center of the universe, or even our solar system. There are glaring flaws in both sides.. you just refuse to see your own flaws.

I'd also like to say that you are completely right in saying that just because science can't prove an ideal now doesn't mean it can't in the future. If science ever produces evidence of God's existence, I will not question it anymore. However, this argument works both ways -- science can and probably will one day discredit large portions (even more so than it already has) of religious text to the point where it is no longer commonly accepted as a valid theory of how the universe and life began. It is much more likely to work out in this scenario, but as said if true evidence of God's existence taken from somewhere other than the Bible is revealed then I shall have no opposition to God anymore.

Perhaps I'll use the word matter. Science cannot answer that question, nor are they anywhere close to answering it. You say science can explain where the first atom came from, okay, then where did the first electron come from? Where did the first source of heat come from? Science mocks the idea that God is omnipotent, that God always was and always will be, so that means science says the first piece of matter wasn't always there. In that case, however, something came to be out of nothing, isn't that irrational?

Faith is defined as belief in the absence of evidence; this is, by definition, irrational, as reason is not being employed at all. The Universe was created by the flying spaghetti monster. This, according to your logic, is a completely rational statement simply because we don't know absolutely how it happened, correct?

No scientist ever seriously thought that the world was flat; the curvature of the Earth was realized thousands of years ago by the Greeks. The inability to demonstrate a claim to be true makes the acceptance of such a claim irrational. If and when positive evidence comes forth regarding the existence of god (good luck with that!), we can discuss it. Until that time, you cannot make up these hypothetical scenarios in an attempt to justify a belief for which there is no evidence.

That's the entire point, we don't know the origin of the universe (or if it even had an origin), and we freely admit it. This does not necessarily mean that something came from nothing; the universe could have a cause that is simply unknown to us at this time. I once saw an interesting video with the physicist Lawrence Krauss, who explained that a universe can in fact emerge from quantum fluctuations that occur in empty space (link to the video).

I'd also like to point out that you have a rather warped view of how science operates. Science does not operate by mocking propositions; it operates via observation, experiment, and the forming of hypotheses. If a hypothesis fails, then it fails. God is such a hypothesis. Studies, for example, have failed to find an increase in the survival rates of those who were prayed for. If there was a god who wanted all to believe, all he need do is manifest his power on Earth via a miracle. Given the commonplace nature of such events in Biblical times, it stands to reason that we should regularly observe such phenomenon, yet we don't.

As I stated in a previous post, though, none of this is relevant to the discussion at hand. Regardless of my ability to explain how the entire universe works, you MUST provide evidence for your claim that god exists. Making a god of the gaps argument does not work (that is, you cannot invoke god every time that there is a gap in our scientific knowledge).

Please, give some actual evidence for the existence of god; don't give hypothetical scenarios in which we discover evidence, don't invoke the supernatural whenever we don't know something, and don't claim that you believe it on faith (for if you do, the SFA section clearly is not right for you).

    This is simple,

If you don't want to believe in god then at least give me the answer where we come from, who we are, how we got here, how is the world so perfectly made sun, moon, water, trees etc.

You can't answer that, and if you do, what ever your answer is i would answer it with "where did (YOUR ANSWER) came from" and so on.

It's not hard for me to believe that there is a God(whatever you want to call it) , whoever he is however he looks like, he is our creator because only a higher power can answer all this questions.

We are all here for a purpose, which cannot be answered upon death. Death is the beginning. Some people believe suicide will take away all their problems, but nobody will commit suicide just by having that in mind, You need courage that only god can give you, Our death will come only when we are ready to begin. To begin what? that's what we will find out.

We have a soul, we are not here just to die. Something created us, and it created us almost perfectly, just do die? no purpose no nothing?.

I don't consider my self part of any religion, i just believe in what's right, and what makes sense.

Have a better explanation than this one? i wanna hear it. Please start by describing what created this world and us.

P.S Theres no such thing as something creating out of nothing. No way that all planets were created from nothing. how can that "nothing" create such wonderful things.

    Delighted to.
Abiogenesis if your asking for the origin of life.
    We are humans, homonoids, life.
    Abiogenesis
It's not really perfectly made, the sun will engulf us in billions of years. The moon formed due to the collision of an asteroid to the earth, water forms at such a temperature, trees are life; Anthropic Principle.

My answer comes from science, empirical evidence, peer reviewed studies, and reason encompassing the aforementioned. Where does your answer belief of God come from? Who created him? Why do we need him? What if he didn't exist?

I answered all those questions does that mean I'm God? Also, we were never 'created'.

Why do you think we have a soul? Any evidence?
My Mum created be, though, my Dad also helped. Who created you? God, or your parents?

Why is the belief in a deity right, and how does it make sense? God of the Gaps Argument, stop using it.

What created the world, nature. What created everything, the universe? I shall describe.

Existence is the replacement of God as our 'creator'. Existence has always existed, it is an axiom. Existence always existed because, if the there was something to create something, then existence preceded the 'creator'.

Who created us, as in life? Abiogenesis.

So his deconversion was because he failed a statistics test after realizing he wasn't prepared, and turned to rely heavily on the intervention of the supernatural to no avail? It's an interesting point of view he presents about truth holding greater authority than god but what would have happened to his theology if he had miraculously (or more like 'luckily') aced his statistics class? I mean, there wasn't much more to his theology. Truth is larger; god doesn't meddle, and everything is explainable via science; and when one looks hard enough, god can be manifested in all things we cherish. Even the Christians hold that idea to be true. I don't know, I suppose something about his narrative seemed dramatized and overeggxagerated, and that just made me want to vomit because of how hard he seems to be trying.

And for future reference to anyone who decides to make an informational narrative about their spiritual epiphanies: describing your delusional experiences of become a godly figure doesn't help you cause, even if you're communicating it strictly in retrospect

    Lol.

And he does over exaggerate but gets to a solid point saying God is really an idea or figure in our heads that we can mold to what we want, that's all it is.

By the way, religions are based on a great amount of delusions. ;)
