Hopefully someone will be able to help me with a couple of questions? Is it common to take a PSD design and code it to work afterwards? Is it an easy method?

If so, does each element of the design have to remain in a separate layer? What file type is required?

    Thanks!

Yes, anyone who knows HTML and CSS can do it.

Keep it as a .psd with all of the layers.

Literally someone like me would take your PSD and turn it into a html/css document, for each page.

It quite simple to do it yourself once you pick up the basics.

Thanks for the replies guys! Does it matter how complex the design is? I.e. are there any limitations with this method?

There aren't really any limitations unless you require functionality - then it extends beyond HTML/CSS.

The size of the website usually dictates the language required for a job. Any frontend developer will usually put the limit at ~10 pages (flat rather than dynamic).

If you require more, such as backend (CMS, logging in with admin panels for users and what not) then you're most certainly looking at PHP, or any shelf backend system such as Magento/WP/Joomla etc.
