Anyone know how?

Does anyone know how to select only the non-transparent pixels on a canvas? Im making another avatar to match my ranks and upcoming UT and i wanna put a really low opacity flame brush (>.<) inside the orb, is there any way to just select the orb? Does it have something to do with a mask? Also, does anyone know how to add those little light bursts that make it looks like its gleaming, like you often see on teeth, is it just a lens flare?

    Thanks,

Hold control and click on that layers thumbnail to select it.

For the light deal tyuo were talking about, maybe try using the pen tool and then stroking it with a soft brush, make sure to click simulate pressure when doing so.

Well, heres what I did, first used a soft round brush, made a dot, and then lowered the opacity a bit, then used a smaller brush, left it at 100% opacity and then duplicated it to double the effect. I then made one line using the pen tool, and stroked it with a small round soft brush, with simulated pressure. Duplicated it and flipped it 90○ Heres what I got. On a bigger scale of what your wanting to do, but it would apply the same way if your putting it on an avatar.
