Any writers on Sythe [or interested in] ?

I was wondering if there are any writers on Sythe.
Not sure if this is the right section to post this under but we'll see.

Me personally I've been writing ever since I watched Californication when I was about ~15 years old (yea I know it's cheesy). It seems really cheesy to try and do something they do in a tv series, but I found it to be quite a fitting method to get all my thoughts out there. A few weeks ago I let one of my very, very close friends read it. They were actually quite amazed about the quality of it. I felt quite excited that someone actually liked my writing.

Anyone else who tried to express themselves or just write down their frustrations or whatever? If you do what was your inspiration behind it to try out writing?

PS: I am not gonna share my stories due to it being personal.
Might try and write something for Sythe if it gets requested by some members.

If you truly want to be a success in the writing world you'll have to first allow the rest of the world to judge your writing. Find a crowd that your writing pertains to, and then find people to invest within that specific style of writing, or you'll just end up being the guy who writes and is never heard. Having only your close friends be the judge of your writing is a bad idea because their opinion was bias from the start

I've been published in 2 small publications and 1 large quarterly publication. Both poetry and short fiction.

This perspective only considers writing in a commercial context. Plenty of people write for themselves and never share their works. See for example reflection journals and diaries created for the purposes of self-improvement and stress management. One simple, short but consistent writing activity I'd recommend anyone interested in introspection is a roses and thorns log. It takes about a minute to do but grants an odd peace of mind. On some occasions you can decide to develop your rose or your thorn and write a page about it in an actual reflections journal in order to explore and learn from your experience.

Can you elaborate on the roses & thorns log? Is it simply writing about a good things/accomplishment etc (rose) and a bad thing/experience/challenge (thorn)? Do you do this? Are you into introspection?

Some of them have gone on to be immensely influential `

    (Walter Benjamin for example).

    I say with Bukowski:

if it doesn't come bursting out of you
    in spite of everything,
    don't do it.
unless it comes unasked out of your
heart and your mind and your mouth
    and your gut,
    don't do it.
if you have to sit for hours
    staring at your computer screen
    or hunched over your
    typewriter
    searching for words,
    don't do it.
if you're doing it for money or
    fame,
    don't do it.
if you're doing it because you want
    women in your bed,
    don't do it.
if you have to sit there and
    rewrite it again and again,
    don't do it.
if it's hard work just thinking about doing it,
    don't do it.
if you're trying to write like somebody
    else,
    forget about it.
if you have to wait for it to roar out of
    you,
    then wait patiently.
if it never does roar out of you,
    do something else.

if you first have to read it to your wife
or your girlfriend or your boyfriend
or your parents or to anybody at all,
    you're not ready.

don't be like so many writers,
don't be like so many thousands of
    people who call themselves writers,
don't be dull and boring and
pretentious, don't be consumed with self-
    love.
the libraries of the world have
    yawned themselves to
    sleep
    over your kind.
    don't add to that.
    don't do it.
    unless it comes out of
    your soul like a rocket,
    unless being still would
    drive you to madness or
    suicide or murder,
    don't do it.
unless the sun inside you is
    burning your gut,
    don't do it.

    when it is truly time,
and if you have been chosen,
    it will do it by
itself and it will keep on doing it
until you die or it dies in you.

    there is no other way.

    and there never was.

You're taking what I said out of context. If the person you're referring to had written and was not heard about you wouldn't have heard about him and you wouldn't be causing me to hear about him either.

I meant they went on to have recognition much later after they published, sometimes after they'd died (as in Benjamin's case).

Plenty of writers at first only share their work with close acquaintances (Kafka barely did even that). So a work's success needn't be measure by whether or not it is "heard of," in any sense.

The definition of a successful work might be better determined by its creator, and it seems like a distraction to think beforehand of what success the work will have, where it will go, by whom will it be read - unless those questions are part of the work, what can considering them possibly add to it?

(also, these comments are directed as much toward @Snail as to you, Lean. I'm not trying to dispute your thoughts.)

I have never really tried anything quite like writing, I personally don't like those kind of methods of relieving feelings or emotions but I definitely see your side and would recommend this to certain individuals.

If you are concerned about being offended or critiqued too hard for your writing, you should consider writing an anonymous blog or something where you can publish your work for others to see.

See.. I've always wanted to sharpen my writing skills.. I just haven't come across the proper outlet, nor have I discovered the resources to further my skills.

I've always referred to writing (in almost any context) as "BSing", because I typically wait 'til the last minute to do it (i.e. research paper, creative writing assignment, etc.) however, I'm typically surprised by my teachers' response when I turn these last-minute pieces in at the great responses I receive.

I've also had many friends ask me to write lyrics or raps for them, which I believe is due to my parents forcing me to read anything and everything (mainly Chauncer..). But something in me has always desired to read and/or write.

I didn't watch the thread so didn't realize I got replies, so sorry for the late replies.
I never wrote with a commercial instinct. My writing comes from wanting to express myself in a different way than I am used to.
I never wrote with the intention of someone ever reading it. It just kinda happend that I let someone read it and noticed that it felt kinda great.

I am not necessarly concered about getting offended or critiqued I have always been very open to ideas and critique from others. I just never put my work online, because most of the stuff I write is about my own life and my thought process etc.
