    Alcohol in Culture

In my country (Korea,) alcohol is a very large part of our culture. It seems that when adults want to socialize, alcohol is a mandatory element in entertainment.
I don't like this; drinking is not my thing, and I don't like how people act when they are drunk. I want to have fun with my friends WITHOUT drinking. However, it seems that we have forgotten how to.

How are things in your countries? Is alcohol a main element when adults get together? If not, what do you do instead of drink, so that everybody is not bored?

Good for you, man. I haven't had a drink in months and I'm sure you'll meet many like-minded nondrinkers when you pursue higher education.

You'll find that alcohol is prominent almost everywhere (Europe especially), it's about the same in America as you described it in Korea; definitely a cultural staple.

I'm Dominican i wouldn't say its part of our culture but what my family believes is to let em drink at an earlier age (earlier than 21) so by the time they part and dink with friends they know their limit, and have learned the effects and to take care of themselves.

Think about the thing you are doing when your drunk now think how would it feel doing these things if you didn't drink? If you party without alcohol you will be happier .. but yea, spend your young life doing what you want to do.

I feel as if drinking alcohol is becoming an accepted behavior in the United States. There are many teenagers who begin to consume alcohol while in high school. Some parents also over look the negative effects of alcohol which leads their children into drinking. Almost every adult party I have heard about through my parents, alcohol has been present, including work events. As for myself, I know every party I have attended, alcohol has been the life of the party. So I do believe it's beginning to become an accepted behavior; as for culture, I'm unsure about that since the United States is a melting pot, at least where I'm from.

I feel ass though drinking varies between cultures, with its absolute low-point in Canada and the United states. We've made it so taboo here that kids are tempted to abuse it.

I would imagine that there wouldn't be as large of a problem in countries where children grow up consuming small amounts of alcohol.
